I looked in the artist lounge about a month ago, and could find nothing on 70s synth punk band, Suicide.
So I wrote a long post which I've just had to delete, 'cos I found contrabandwidth posted about them here in the meantime.
Suicide's albums and performances in the late 1970s and early 1980s are regarded as some of the most influential post punk recordings, and helped shape the direction of indie rock, industrial music and dance music.
Amongst others, The Sisters of Mercy, Henry Rollins, Soft Cell, The Fleshtones, Ric Ocasek of The Cars, and R.E.M. have listed Suicide as one of their influences. Bruce Springsteen is also a Suicide fan, having performed their songs in concert.
Instead of a full post, I'm just going to post a track worth listening to, 'Ghostrider'.

Anyone know if they used this song in the new(ish) movie? I know Henry Rollins covered it for "The Crow" (which is where I first heard it). It's funny because I've actually seen Suicide in concert (and had completely forgotten - must be getting old)and people were still walking out, still not getting it. Ah, well.

Rawks: I haven't listened to them for ages either. Saw a fev vids worth looking at on utube when I was researching.
Kristiana: There Was a post there already- I just didn't realise. It was in the lag between me checking (about a month ago) and actually writing the post during which contrabandwidth filled the gap. One of my fave songs of theirs too. Takes me back to about, umm, maybe '82 or so.
Contrabandwidth: What's the movie? Don't know anything about it. You SAW Suicide in concert? When? What were they like? Would love to se the '23 Minutes Over Brussels' vid but can't seem to find it anywhere o the web.

Martin Rev & Alan Vega were the oddest duo to perform in a band ever. They had absolutely nothing in common. Vega was all streetwise & rock n roll oriented while Rev was introspective & a total geek. Somehow it worked realy good. I watched Alan Vega live years ago & his cover of "born in the usa" was just unbeliveable. Both Vega & Rev ealy solo albums are quite good too.

My friends were in a band called The White Lights (they were a really well received band locally), and it was their final show, so actually more were there to see that show. I think it was after American Supreme came out. I don't think there exists a video of "23 minutes over Brussels", but the original was recorded on a cassette tape and released on the second disc of the reissue of the first suicide album (on Mute Records). The Vega and Rev were in good form, though the sounds didn't really sound like you'd expect (I mean the original keyboards they used they bought at a thrift store, so 30 years later they are using modern equipment). I mean they still looked tough (for being like 60) and Vega smoked the whole time which is real cool since they are old. Suicide can't really be considered "great" as musicians, because I think it's always been about performance and breaking down the boundaries rock had set up. It takes on a whole different meaning this late in the game.
