SOUNDS OF FUTURE PAST AND PRESENT PERFECT

I'm Chucking Out Music That Doesn't Exist (instead of doing my homework...)

Posted over 2 years ago
As some of you may know, I'm on a self-imposed Mog hiatus, due to study and work commitments. Today is my day off, and the first day that I'm supposed to be doing my homework.Instead, I'm going through my iTunes folder and deleting music. I got 'given' a whole lot of music when I first started my digital music collection, and I've found over the years that there's some stuff that I'll just never listen to because it's just not my thing.Artists like Aimee Mann (who never got a listen in) and others like Wilco (yes, i know, sacrilege to some) which I once listened to briefly, but was never really into (don't really do Alt-Country), and will never listen to again, and a whole heap of other tracks. The Doves will probably get the heave, and I suspect I've seen the last of The Mountain Goats. I don't hate any of this music, I just don't listen to it, and don't expect to any time soon. I'm expecting both brickbats and bouquets here for some of my choices, but there you go.Then I started to look at the list of music in my digital collection according to Mog-o-Matic.

WTF!

George Michael? According to Mog, I've got 'Careless Whisper' not once, but twice in my collection. The closest I get to George Michael is a George Michael vs Missy Elliot mash-up. Beth Orton? Doesn't exist anywhere in any form, and Mog won't let me delete it from my page 'cos it clearly wants me to have Beth in my collection. There's way more weirdness in there, but alas, school work beckons. What wackiness is happening in your collection? What would you chuck - if only you were brave enough, or not such a hoarder? And because this is a music post, here's a track by Four Tet I am listening to, and definitely not chucking. Love the mandolin in this one:

  1. Lizziegreeneyes says Sonya Kitchell hasn't piqued my interest enough just yet ! Shins... this is another case of - a couple songs are nice - but I am not a fan of the album. Jarvis Church... he was nice for a time - but not there any longer. I have CDs - but these are on the pod & really don't need to be - haven't listened to the three since they were placed so lovingly on it. I still want to give them a little more time to percolate - think I'd dig Sonya if I really gave her half a chance. Shins... dunno & Jarvis - when the mood strikes - he's a lot of fun... maybe keep - just get of the pod.

  2. skjs says I made the mistake of loading every CD I had of artists I thought I liked and ended up with an ipod full of a lot of great tracks mixed up with an even greater number of mediocre ones. It got to a stage when I was cycling to work hoping to have something to help me 'seize the day' when, in fact, I spent the 20 minutes or so skipping 'alright' track after 'alright' track. Wire spring to mind. I still have some of their tracks but the 4 or 5 CDs were removed soon enough.

  3. nicki says I once thought that I needed a 40GB iPod. Now I know that all that unreliable hard drive disk space does is attract crap. Same thing happens when you first hook up with people who share music digitally - you're game to try anything, and often never listen to it again. Or clean it out of your hard drive. Nice track, by the way.

  4. Rawkkiddoh says I started to do the same, and when I got to my collection of music from 70's Porn Films (is there a cd like that out there) I decided that it was just a big mistake

  5. Girlcrawl says Fantastic Four Tet track - would definitely not 'chuck' that one! Can't say there exists music in the collection that I would part with at the moment - rarely purchase anything these days that I'm not certain is a 'keeper'. The last time I pruned the vault resulted in the library receiving maybe 4 disks (G. Love, David Guetta, Sweetback, and a film soundtrack I can't recall). Do have a folder on the desktop that I'm afraid to peer into as it contains mp3 singles that may prove utterly atroucious upon closer inspection. Ditto nicki's comment about hard drive disk space. Cheers, and best of luck with the studies!

  6. The Serenity Vortex says I did exactly the same thing a while back. Music is infinite and sometimes it felt like my collection was. MOG has been doing some odd things, and recons I'm into Shirley Bassey lol! But there is every chance that MP3s and stuff hold the wrong information in the ID3 tag. Hope the course is going well dude..........
