Michael Hutchence Goes AWOL From INXS

Posted over 2 years ago
Max Q was a short-lived Australian band, who recorded one album in 1989. It consisted of INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and Ollie Olsen, a composer, synthesist and sound designer who has been producing and performing electronic and experimental music for the past thirty years. Hutchence and Olsen met a couple of years earlier on set of the feature film 'Dogs in Space'. They were accompanied by key members of the Melbourne post-punk scene, most of whom had previously collaborated with Olsen.Max Q - 'Way of The World'Max Q was a commercially oriented electronic/pop exploration which was constructed around Olsen's hybrid electronic song structures. 'Way Of The World' and 'Sometimes' both bristle with a vibe of punk/agro meets electro/house splendor - an area numerous bands have since explored in depth. Max Q - 'Sometimes'Jittery guitars clash with looped percussion attacks, and Hutchence's harder than usual vocals butt up against orchestral flourishes and the odd sonic bleep. Faint traces of Talking Heads, Eastern influences and the specter of Barry White also frame this music which is probably the most interesting Michael Hutchence was ever involved in.The album was critically acclaimed but commercially unsuccessful. They had minor hits with the songs "Sometimes" (originally recorded by Olsen with his band Orchestra Of Skin And Bones) and "Way of the World". They toured briefly before Hutchence went back to his day job with INXS.The other members of INXS were reportedly unhappy with Hutchence's 'solo career'. The Max Q album has never been re-issued.Culled from wiki & fan site http://www.michaelhutchence.org/work/maxq/

  2. Jammy Jeff says I remember buying this and being so shocked by the departure from his INXS sound. It was a brave, and sadly the songs didn't stick for me. The British distributors hopelessly over-estimated sales because it was Michael Hutchence, and I can remember the album being given away free with the next INXS album "X".
