Michael Clark Dance Co. dances to The Fall

hey Fall fans, did you ever blast your favorite fall songs but weren't exactly sure how to dance to them? Here's the perfect way, approved by Mark E. Smith himself (like 20 years ago maybe?)Wrap yourself in some old curtains or a trench coat 10 sizes too big, borrow your grandmother's underwear, move the furniture out of the way, and just...go! it's kinda funny yet kinda distubing at the same time!
:)
:(

sorry, the embedding option was diabled in youtube, so you have to click on the link.

Uncommon Records Label - great progressive hip hop

i stumbled on this great experimental hip hop label called Uncommon Records. i first heard about it on the wfmu website on this show:
http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/25009

and then i checked out their myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/uncommonrecords

and now i'm in the process of browsing through their website and seeing what's going on:
http://www.uncommonmusic.net/index.cfm

check it out when you're in the mood for some new hip hop artists.

RRIICCEE -- Vincent Gallo, Eric Erlandson & more

if you get the chance to see a band called RRIICCEE with vincent gallo and eric erlandson...GO! i went last night for several reasons, but none of those reasons was because i knew the music would be good. but that's exactly what had happened.

i went because i like vincent gallo's gruff and strange but kind of sweet persona in movies and etc. (no, i haven't seen "the brown bunny" yet.) and for sort of an underground figure as he is, he's worked with a lot of amazing people that i admire. basquiat, yoko ono, john frusciante, etc. etc. i also went because i am from buffalo, and have recently moved back to buffalo and vincent gallo seems to articulate some of the love/hate feelings and frustrations that a person can have for this place.

all that aside, i was a bit apprehensive about seeing this show because it was called "experimental" and "improvisational" which in and of itself is totally fine. but in new york city i had a few experiences of seeing some shows in the "noise" scene that were tedious and boring to say the least. however, this show was filled with beautiful improvisational soundscapes which i can't even describe and i don't think there's any recording of.

all i can say is see for yourself if you get the chance. this project isn't hype. i'll attach the club's blurb about them below...

Vincent Gallo (born Buffalo, NY on April 11 th, 1962) and Eric Erlandson (born Los Angeles, CA on January 9 th, 1963) have formed a new musical project, RRIICCEE. Gallo, a movie actor, filmmaker and musician, is the critically acclaimed writer and director of such films like Buffalo 66 and The Brown Bunny. He has released two solo albums on the British recording label, Warp Records and also collaborated with the artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in the New York no-wave musical group Gray. Erlandson is the former guitarist and founding member of the rock band Hole, along with Courtney Love. The band released three albums including their 1994 commercial breakthrough, Live Through This. RRIICCEE will embark on their debut national tour in December.

RRIICCEE is a spontaneous collective between the two musicians (with the potential of additional members) and exhibits the creation of composition within a live performance. For all appearances, the outfit does not perform pre-written music and is not limited to the boundaries of one specific musical genre. At the present time, RRIICCEE has no recorded music and has no plans on recording a commercial release.

Gallo offered, "Improvisation is not a good word for what we're doing. It's more a gesture of composing and performing at the same time, always hoping to avoid musical cliché or jamming. We've chosen not to go into a studio in a traditional way like other bands have done in the past: to make recordings, cut them up, dub on them, fine tune and mix them, and then release them as an album, then later, go on tour, pantomiming those recordings over and over each night as a form of cabaret. Instead, for a long time now, we've chosen to remain open, to grow and change more naturally, and when we play live, the music is often created during the performance. If we choose to record a performance, the recording itself is only evidence of that creative moment. The purpose of recording then, is to listen back for enjoyment."

RRIICCEE have previously performed at the Fuji Rock Festival in Japan as well as a performance in San Francisco in 2007.

gogol bordello and dj eugene hutz

about 6 or 7 years ago my friends and i used to go to this place in chinatown nyc called "mehanata"...or more commonly referred to as "the bulgarian bar" which was this little doorway hidden in an alcove on the corner of canal and broadway. the very first time i went, i did not want to stay. it was like a dark restaurant with maybe 5 people in there...at 11pm on a saturday night. friends told me "this is the most fun you will have in new york city" and i said "nah!" and then the clock struck midnight and all hell broke loose. what an amazing time we had and it became the thing we all looked forward to every single weekend. i started hearing music that i hadn't heard before, the crowd was going insane, dancefloor with hardly an inch of room, people from all over the world, drinks served in plastic cups and flying across the room, people dancing on tables, the dj with special guests doing live performances seemingly spontaneously. that dj was eugene hutz of gogol bordello. ("start wearing purple" was filmed in that bar.)

i have left new york city but next time i return for a visit, a trip to the new mehanata bulgarian bar will definitely be on my list and it should be on yours too if you like this whole scene. (i hope that it's still just as much fun.) there aren't too many places like this one. here's the website if you want to check it out: http://www.mehanata.com/dj.htm

Sebastian Martel - great video, great song - new artist (for me!)

i just thought i'd share this video, especially since there are no posts on this artist. my husband found this video on you tube and knew i would love it...i love the quirky art direction of the video, it reminds me of "the science of sleep" a little bit. different director though.

so now i am a fan. thought i'd share it and now i'm going to go and look for some more of seb martel's music. i'm trying to find a cd to buy, but can't find one. i do seem to see online that he has also worked with blackalicious and femi kuti. anyway, i hope you enjoy the video and the song and any info on where i can get this cd would be much appreciated.

rick froberg is my favorite hero this week...or maybe longer

i just completed my collection of hot snakes cd's. i only had one before, automatic midnight, which i got at one of their live shows quite a few years ago. i've seen them live twice and i don't know if i've seen anything as powerful in recent years. just as great the second time, like you're being shot off in a cannon at full speed. sorry to those of you who never caught them live :(

how do i import a video into this thing? other people seem to be able to do it. hmm...i'll just put a link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6K0sxhslakk

anyway, they are all great musicians, but rick froberg amazes me because he just seems to effortlessly just spew out so much energy. my husband told me that i would really like drive like jehu too. so, i decided to look him up online and learned that in addition, he is also an amazing illustrator and he did all the album covers and it looks like he's got this whole other career. for those of you that are interested, check it out: http://www.rickfroberg.com/

i have the january blahs. it's grey, it's icy rain, it's boring. i'm looking for french pop or something similar, probably from the 60's or so. i'm already a big serge gainsbourg fan, so i'm looking for something like that, except maybe more towards the unusual side than towards the ballad side. any suggestions?
