Public Enemy Cover - better than the original!

Posted over 3 years ago
Just been updating my blog and I've finally gotten round to reveiwing one of the best British covers ever - Tricky's take on Public Enemy's Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos. Truly awesome & imho, better than the original.....

  1. Dale says I agree, I like the original, but Tricky and Martina take it to a much better place. Must be the sweet female lyrics, with the monster guitars.

  2. etcvisitor says in fact i have to say that whole album is 100% amazing... the PE cover, not only takes that song to a new level but it also pushes the whole album over the top. ive always liked tricky but maxinquaye is his only album that i feel really passionate about... maybe it has something to do with when i heard it.

  3. ciaran says It's one of my favourite albums of all time - I sometimes pose myself (rather stupid) little quizzes - one of them is; Desert Island - Shipwrecked - one CD allowed - Maxinquaye or Blue Lines? Very tricky indeed!

  5. Sureshot says Both amazingly talented artists. Couldn't separate the two versions of Black Steel, both have are quality for totally different reasons. For another great PE cover seek out Senser's cover of She Watch Channel Zero. Best PE cover I ever saw performed live was the Barenaked Ladies playing Fight the Power with a double bass and washboard.

  6. abstract erin says as much as i love public enemy, i completely agree with this.

  7. ciaran says It doesn't really count as a cover, and it's fairly obvious, but as an angsty teenager their version of Bring The Noise, with Anthrax, rocked me in every way imaginable. Awesome!

  8. reverend geoffrey says as much as i love public enemy, the rest of you are out of your minds. there's no cover of any p.e. song that's gonna be better than the original. i don't give a shit if it's an 1000 piece orchestra w/ 500 kids singing in the background w/ cannons and gongs and fireworks. the original song is an angry song. the tricky cover is good, but better than the original? please.

  9. ciaran says Hi Geoff, As I said in the opening post, this is just my opinion. I may well be nuts (the fact that I bought a couple of Girls Aloud tracks recently could be one sign of this) but preferring one track to another is not a sign of madness - it's an opinion. Just as valid as anyone else's - even yours. You do realise that British people can be angry too don't you? In fact Tricky probably had (has) more to be angry about than Chuck - Chuck was (is) a middle class college grad, writing about the things that he saw, but hadn't necessarily experienced. Tricky was (is) an orphan to all intents & purposes (father left when he was a baby, mother commited suicide when he was 4), who spent time in prison aged 17. Again, this doesn't mean that one is any more valid than the other, just that to suggest that Tricky's version lacks "anger" is a bit simplistic. Please indeed.
