WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

music : the universal language (kinda like sex but kinda not, too)

Posted over 2 years ago
since i’ve been on my own here for a couple of months, i've been hanging out at this tiny bar where the bartenders are from various english speaking countries. this bar is so small that it’s basically impossible to not meet people there. i speak very limited french so that can be cumbersome at times. but here, most people speak english, which makes it easy for me.anyway, i met a couple of french guys who happen to LOVE ska music. that got me thinking about some of the ska bands that i love – less than jake, skankin’ pickle, op ivy, etc. they had never heard of any of them! then they mentioned a bunch of european bands that i’ve never heard of – but they LOVE reel big fish. i’m not a fan of that band, but we talked a bit and decided that we were going to exchange some music. they turned me on to ska-p (spain), sustraia (france) and spook & the guay (france) - and i don't speak spanish but the music is really fun (as ska music should be). also, now they’re huge fans of less than jake, op ivy, and the bosstones. apparently, there’s a huge underground ska scene here even today.so i guess that's my 'real world' emcd story. damn. whenever i think of stuff to post here, it always sounds better than when i actually post it. i need to work on my execution... or mention anna...

  1. Rawkkiddoh says My question is do they listen to more ska-punk or traditional two-toned ska. I dont think you ever really liked bands like the Slackers and Stubborn All-Stars, but I have noticed a lot of these bands spend a lot of time touring in Europe.

  2. chulsmith says it's more ska-punk type stuff - 3rd wave or whatever it was called back in the 90s. i have no idea what they're singing about, but it's catchy as hell. i'll up some to multiply if you want...

  7. chulsmith says anna ::: many levels? or are did you mean 'positions'? ;) coop ::: yes i want to ska or yes i want to anna's comment? and both isn't a bad thing either... lilith ::: haven't heard of them, but i'll definitely do some checking... august ::: um. no. maybe their first album before they went all 'i'm just a girl who's walking in the spiderwebs' on us...

  9. Augusts1 says Ok, i guess i'm outta the ska loop then but that's not necessarily a bad thing for me. I can only take ska in small doses like reggae music. I like it mind you but it gets old fast for me ya know.

  10. chulsmith says coop ::: sure! august ::: i guess if listening to happy music gets old... ;) i think i know where you're coming from. i can only take so much 90s alternative, too. hahaha. just kidding. you'll see by my collection that the 90s live in me as much as it does in you...

  12. Universalis says ° ° I posted some Ska-P recently on Mply, really a nice thing i was lucky to see these play live several times, and they raised hell out of the audience each time, a pity they pulled off (said temporarily) can't wait they come back... Most of them songs speak about anarchy, revolution, legalization of weed, freedom, love... If you don't understand spanish you just move you feet and dance you legs OK ;-)))
