MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

(137)

I was back in VA this week for work and Tuesday night my mother and I met my sister at Carlos O’Kellys for drinks. My sister was talking about how good Patron was and how she doesn’t drink tequila – she drinks Patron. Curious as to the difference, my mother and I took a shot with her. I immediately regretted it (because it tasted just like the cheapest tequila I’d ever drank) and told my sister I was expecting something magical. (Yes, I’m getting to a point here…) So, I drive my mother home and she slurs her words a bit (my mother is a lightweight, one bloody mary and one shot of tequila, yep) and I ask her if the Patron had stolen her verbs. She said “No. I feel magical….lyrical.”

And that’s how our evening really started. Because I knew she was quoting a song but I couldn’t place it and she knew it. She giggled at my frustration but wouldn’t tell me what it was. Eventually, she told me it was The Logical Song by Supertramp. Then, a bit later, she starts singing to herself the “badadabadada” part of that Gym Class Hero’s song. I told her I was surprised she was singing Gym Class Hero’s, which was meet with a blank stare. I said “you know ‘take a look at my girlfriend, she’s the only one I got’…” “Yeah,” she says, “that’s Supertramp.” No shit. Huh. At this point, my sister shows up and my mother pulls up Breakfast in America for my sister and I to listen to. I recognize “Take the Long Way Home” and mention that both The Logical Song and Take the Long Way Home always make me feel sad when I hear them.

That starts my sister on trying to remember a song from our childhood that had always made her sad. She says “It’s about a guy that’s an alcoholic, and some land, and there’s an amazing sax solo.” I’m completely lost but my mom starts humming a tune that I know even though I can’t name it. My mother calls my brother to see if he can place it but he’s in the same boat as me. My mother thinks a bit harder, comes up with some lyrics – “Know he’s never gonna stop moving because he’s rolling. He’s a rolling stone.” My sister and I google the lyrics and “sax solo” and come up with Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. Ah yes, good stuff.

Then, that mystery solved, my sister starts talking about Jackson Browne. I swore I’d never heard a Jackson Browne song, so she pulls up itunes and starts playing me Jackson Browne songs – and I recognized one – The Road. She’s played five song clips, I’ve recognized one and liked none - so I try to change the subject onto another childhood favorite. I asked them who did the song “oh, won’t you stay…just a little bit longer.” My sister immediately starts playing the song and I was a bit amazed that she was able to pull it up so fast. “Damn! That’s the one. So, who sings it?” … “Jackson Browne.” Heh.

I love my family.

as soon as i read that i knew she was referring to Supertramp. I freakin' love them. And I've heard the Gym Class Heroes song, and it's totally weird. Lemme know and I'll upload a Supertramp album for you on multiply.

Gym Class Heroes. If a band signed to DecayDance can use correct grammar, so can you.

and p.s. i hadn't heard the gerry rafferty song since i was a kid...but totally remembered it and had to immediately purchase that album off iTunes.

The Foo Fighters do a very excellent kick ass version of Baker Street if you care, or know who they are.

Amy, thanks. I actually downloaded Breakfast in America tonight, but if you have any others that I need to hear - please put them up. :) Ha! Baker Street is such an awesome song. I don't think I had heard it in years either, but it stuck with me.

Heath, I have an excuse. See, at first I was thinking Hero's but thought that was wrong and deleted the comma without thinking about adding the "e." Oh - and, bite me. heh.

Lester, very cool. I'm going to go look that up.

I hate it when lyrics or a melody suddenly jump into your head and you can't figure out what song they are from! I also hate it when you're listening to a song and think "wow, this song reminds me of that other song!" but you can't remember the other song's title. Does that make any sense? Oh well, google sounds like a good solution!

I don't want to bite anyone. I just want a job.

bowieface, it makes perfect sense. I'm still trying to figure out what song "fire it up" by modest mouse reminds me of.

Heath, can't help you there. Heh.

I can't find Baker Street by Foo Fighters. You say you have Amy? M? Pretty please :)

Well, I'm trying but no one wants to help.

I have had more than my fair share of song stuck in my head that I could only remember bits and pieces. I only wish my brother and mother were able to help me out in these moments

Heath, no one wants to help you get a job? Hmm. I am assuming now that you are not just looking for any old job. Maybe you should just take what you can get for now.

Kevin, my family can be pretty damn cool. They make me smile.

Lyrikhan, I'm glad I could help. :) And you're right - even after we found the name and artist, the artist name rang no bells for me.

Kevin, of course. I meant in a strictly musical sense.

Amy, thank you thank you! :)

Heath, you are telling me the McDonald's that's the closest to you doesn't need anybody? The gas station doesn't need a clerk on the midnight shift? etc, etc.

Ok, I watched a news segment the other day where they named y'all the "please me" generation. Do you like that better? Haha.

To hell with a pastry chef!

Posted

No, not really, because I don't aim to be pleased. I know I never will be, no matter what I do or what someone else does. Ok, that just sounds nihilistic, and I'm not a nihilist, I'm a skeptic. I would think they want to call us the txt msg gen, with all they're doing these days. For the record, I like IM, I think txts are pointless.

What do you mean by that? That Ace of Cakes guy is genius. I've been watching too much food-related programming.

Ash, I'm pretty sure that line "Oh won't you stay, just a little bit longer" is from an even older song than Jackson Browne. I think it might be a Franki Valli song from the 50's. I'm gonna do some research on it!

Um..."Stay" is the classic doo-wop-influenced ballad that was first recorded by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs and first released in 1960. Covered many times, but, as the lyrics to another great song say, the original is still the greatest. BTW, I already posted about the great mash-up of "The Logical Song" and "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley with a bit of The Who and Rockwell tossed in, but not the song itself. So here ya go, chucky:

Next? "Baker Street" meets AKON at my MOG page.

I love the post but i have mixed feeling about supertramp.- back in the day there was 2 type of people, the ones that listened to supertramp, yes, dire straits, ... and then the ones that listened to ramones, clash, real kids. but then I liked so much the way you wrote this post that I feel I may like to listen to supertramp. the power of the words. mike, that mash up is awesome and it is great you brought the maurice & the radiants original here. classic.

Oh wow! All these songs are totally songs that I hear and I take a mental note "I need to get this song." But I don't know the artists/titles, and also I'm bad at keeping track of all my mental notes.

Judging by their bandname, I always thought that Supertramp was a cheesy '80s hair metal band. Hah. And the beginning of that Rafferty song reminds me of part soap opera, and part porn movie. I dunno..

Posted
| Permalink

Sam9 - Supertramp was neither 80s nor Cheesy nor hair metal. The Breakfast in America album and the logical song ruled the airwaves in the 70s. You couldn't escape it. When any of the songs came up on a nearby radio, you HAD to sing along because you'd heard the songs so many times the lyrics were programed into your brain.

Chucky - this is such a great story. How awesome to do this with your family. I love that your mom was being coy with you.

Heath, you want a great job on a silver platter and you don't want to be pleased? Please. I meant no disrespect to the pastry chefs - heh.

blue, thanks:) I'll give them a listen. History?

August, good catch. Now that you've posted that - I think I may have heard that version too.

Cody, nice thing is that I don't ever have to look outside of my family for a good time. :)

Mike, that mash up kicks serious ass! Are you yanking my chain about Baker Street and Akon? You have to be, but I'd pay to hear it all the same. :)

talyspin, haha - it's a word now. I actually got it from my dad. I think he brushed off on her too.

soulrocket, that's interesting and it also makes perfect sense to me. You'll have to let me know if you can stomach them now. :)

moovyphreak, it was indeed. My family is always good for a fun night.

Sam, they are good songs aren't they? I just listened to Baker Street again to see if I could hear the porno - and I kind of could...haha.

LMI, I was born in 1975 and the lyrics are even programmed into my brain...haha. My mom can be the queen of coy when she wants to.

SA, haha - I hear you. It happens to me more than it should.

Hey Mike, thanks for letting us know who did the original. I just did an internet search w/the lyrics that I knew & found that Hollies remake & thought it was the original. I was only 4 year offs, lol!

Ash I love all those songs too, they were a part of my growing up teen years. I had a conversation w/my Dad yesterday & I was telling him about the music fest I saw Erykah Badu at last w/e. He didn't know who she was or who Taj Mahal or Rickie Lee Jones were for that matter, so feel very fortunate that your Mom has a clue about music! Wish I could share that w/my Mom. Le sigh.

great post! I've only been trying to read it for two friggin' days - arrgh. But enough of dat shit . . . excellent story. I don't know about the "two kinds of people," I listened to yes, supertramp and dire straits and the clash, but I always was the weirdest chick in my high school. Breakfast in America is one of my favorites though, always will be, and how can you not like Baker Street? :)

Baker Street is quite possibly one of my favorite songs ever. And the cover may be better than the original. Let me know if you haven't gotten a copy of that yet.

One of my coworkers went to high school with one of the Gym Class Heroes band members.

"Baker Street" was one of my faves when I was a kid. Supertramp, not so much. I was subjected to it on a regular basis because I grew up in Classic Rocksville. I was a total AM Gold and disco baby and now that I'm old and subject to nostalgia trips, I drop everything whenever I hear "Baker Street" to listen and sing along, just like I did when I was a kid. Thanks for making me drop everything. Don't worry, nothing was breakable.

Hey. Sounds like you had a wonderful time reminiscing with your family. So much of everyone's personal history seems to be linked to music.

I'd better shut up before I start naming long lost favorite albums that I once owned on 8-track tape. ;)

Michelle, I feel you. I completely gave up even trying to sign into mog yesterday. Baker Street is most definitely very cool.

Britt, :) They're lovable. And some very interesting things will come out of my sister's mouth if you wait long enough...haha.

AJ, thanks, Amy put it up for me so I have it now. So, did your coworker go to school with the hot one or one of the others? heh.

Donia, me too, me too. Glad nothing was breakable...haha. ;)

Jaymog, sounds like you have a post in you that needs to be written. :)

Shud, well I do like Stay. There is that. :)

Chucky, great post and great family story. I was away for a while and caught up on the 47 comments. I don't think I could have that type of discussion with my Mom, my brothers or their families.

I think my brother had Supertramp on 8-track in '79 and I have always loved "The Logical Song." I didn't know who sang or the name of "Baker Street" until it appeared in Good Will Hunting, but I always liked the song.
