WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

making people want to stab themselves in the ear all the world over

This is what I get for surfing the internet when I’m supposed to be working – serves me right. I thought I was a fan of globalization until this Slate article (http://www.slate.com/id/2165921/fr/flyout) showed me the evil that can come of it. To lessen my pain a bit I will subject you to the same torture. Here’s the most asinine chorus so far in 2007 in seven different languages:*Japanese*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c6YhaDA6fNc*German*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHdWA65bUVo*Chinese*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_N13DLrRdr4&mode=related&search=*Italian*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKf99abUzgg*French*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erQjjiBKx-Y*Spanish*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfV5bNsBC6g*Portuguese*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W5bwXZRB1-kOr, if you are really brave, here’s all of them in *one video*http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMgGPKE1tcUEnjoy. Heh.Update: even mog hates Avril Lavigne and isn't letting me hyperlink so you get all the ugly addresses instead.

  10. chucky says John, what's your secret? It's like picking a scab for me, I can't resist. Troy, I just got a very un-pc image in my head - hahaha - thanks for that. Heath, I did - they didn't work. Troy, I said hyperlink but I meant those pretty little highlighted words that hide the address. Heh. davesonic, I accept your apology on behalf of the rest of the world. haha. :P Sam, because it had to be done..haha. I have no idea if that's her or not although the Chinese one sounded sort of robotic.

  13. Jonh Ingham says My secret? Good question...my almost 12 yr old daughter rabidly hates stuff like Avril, so that's a good indicator. :-) Then I follow up on the good stuff I find through MOG. Next thing I know I'm drowning in music and never listen to the radio. And if it's bubbling up in mass media and is good, somehow it seems to get through my Cone Of Silence.

  16. dredmunkey says hmm, i think that slate piece might make more sense to me if i was familiar with avril...i know of her, but don't think i have heard anything she has done. on the whole globalization tip, do you think that this will lead to a "world language" that will be a mashup of current spoken languages (english, french, chinese, etc) and internet/txt speak...? i know that english is somewhat global, but i think the net will lead to an even more hybrid...or maybe it won't.

  18. chucky says dred, you and John are the luckiest people on earth..haha. I don't really know why, but this girl sticks in my damn craw. Interesting thought - one global hybrid language. I think it would be cool but I can't see all of us ever agreeing long enough to get one new language out of it. I do think we'll all pick up more words from other languages though. But, the day I see "lol" in the dictionary I think I'll die a little inside. heh. Melinda, haha - I had to do it.

  24. mousetrap says I agree (duh) that it is a stupid, stupid, _stupid_ song. And it's also stupid too. But did anybody catch Ms. Lavigne's appearance on SNL a few weeks back? I did - I was too lazy to switch when she was introduced - and I have to say that I was struck by how, well, lackadaisical she seemed about the song. She seriously looked disenchanted, as though maybe, just maybe, she'd started actually _listening_ to what she was singing and suddenly realized, "Oh my God - this is the most asinine chorus so far in 2007!" Now I know there's that whole post-hip, offhand, 'I'm just gonna toss off this song here and I don't really care if you like it or not" approach, but this didn't seem like that to me. I actually (God help me) stuck around and watched her second song to see if it had the same feel, and it did - I couldn't tell you for the life of me what the song was, but she just seemed to be phoning it in and eager for it to end. (The band members, on the other hand, did a creditable job of masking their inner desolation at having taken such a soul-sucking gig.) Oooh, lucky you! I found the "performance" on YouTube - "*click here*":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T9bsSNaiWQ (God help you) if you want to watch it and see what you think. Anyway, I'm perfectly willing to admit that I could be wrong about this, but it really did jump out at me and I'm wondering if anyone else had the same impression. Honestly, the video (again, God help me) was a revelation to me because for all of her tiresome posing and faux-bad-girl mannerisms, she actually appears to _care_, for better or worse. But at least the video does serve the public good by establishing once and for all that *NOBODY* should waste their time on girls with *GLASSES!* It's just an instant tipoff that they're, like, so _whatever!_

  25. Dale says I have (heaven help me) seen her play live on Letterman; she played "Sk8er Boi", jumped around, and got into the song. Mousetrap nailed it; in the SNL performance, her arms are at her sides when she's not hanging onto the mic. I don't know if this means that she realizes her song sucks, or if she's just tired of playing it. Only time will tell.

  33. Lady Miss Ian says Chucky - you're living up to your evil namesake. But then again I must be a maschocist since I, too, went through all the languages. I sure hope Avril will have a good support group in the Pre-Fab Pop Idol Halfway House when she gets older. Poor girl is probably just months away from shaving her head.

  34. chucky says Dale, heh. Lester, then Avril would have won. Heh. And, since I plan to also talk about Avril's performance it's a good thing you ducked...haha. Kevin, hahahha... mousetrap, that performance was very bad. But, I'm not sure that I think it means she cares that it's crap - I think it's part of the posturing. Pimp, admit you listened - just admit it. :) Eric, I even liked the fake Oneders better than Avril. August, I wonder if Toni Basil likes Avril. I guess no. haha. Ty, :) Sam, now that's a video I'd watch in 7 languages. FP, you were strong enough to resist the rest? I salute you. :) Lady Miss Ian, I try. :) Picturing Avril with shaved head......heh.
