WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Popular music

Mog has been awesome for introducing me to stuff I hadn’t heard before. One of the things I’ve noticed though, is that there is great disdain here for the stuff on the radio. The top 40, heavy rotation songs. I don’t listen to the radio very often but there are songs I have heard that were, gasp, popular, that I like. I will not be shamed. Here are the songs that everybody else likes that I like too. Admit it, you like some popular songs too. What are they?Shakira – Don’t BotherFor one, it’s on the rock side of pop. The song sounds like Deep Forest, the Cranberries, and the Cure mixed together. Her voice, in all of its oddness, has grown on me.Rihanna – Pon De ReplayBecause rhythm and movement is part of being human. Who hasn’t seen a little baby bouncing to music? This song is infectious in that regard – your body will move this even if you aren’t aware of it. And, the beat is simple enough that even the completely rhythm-less are straight.Panic! At the Disco – I Write Sins Not TragediesI actually like all but 2 songs on this album. I know they got labeled emo, which is a crying damn shame, because they aren’t. I don’t know what category they would go in. Go listen to it, I can’t describe it to you. Do it when your family is out of town if you have to, hidden in a closet with a wireless connection if necessary.Mariah Carey – We Belong TogetherBecause the song is friggin awesome, that’s why. Story about this song: many moons ago my brother and his girlfriend visited me. We were going through my iTunes and when I left the room this song came up on the party shuffle. I knew my brother, who listens to hardcore exclusively, was going to ream my ass for it. When I came back to the room he was singing along to the song. He had heard it on the radio one day and fell in love with it. Enough said.Ashlee Simpson f. Missy Elliott – L.O.V.E. remixRemember high school and everyone stomping their feet on the bleachers? The song starts with that sound. It’s the only thing I miss about those old school days. That sound is irresistible to me. Besides that, I just like her voice. She caught a lot of shit for the whole SNL thing but really, she is good at what she does. The songs are catchy.Gwen Stefani – Hollaback GirlSee above: high school bleachers. Love em. This one took a very long time to grow on me. But, I was unable to resist its pull.Hanson – Mmm BopIt makes me feel happy that’s why.

  2. simonlewis07 says Amen to that, brotha! I like a lot of Top 40 stuff, too. Okay, maybe that's a lie, maybe I don't like a lot of it, but I don't mind it. For example, I'm a big big fan of Panic! at the Disco. They remind me a lot of The Academy Is... or even older Fall Out Boy stuff (like "Take This To Your Grave" or "...Evening Out With Your Girl.)

  4. rock or death says I really dig that Brittany Spears song called Toxic. I also like a bunch of Beyonce's songs, including Crazy In Love and Naughty Girl. I dig the Panic! At The Disco tune, sure, along with a few tunes by My Chemical Romance.

  6. Egress says I love lot's of popular music! There's a reason for popularity besides marketing sometimes - that it's actually good. Radio can kill the beauty when it overplays, but sometimes I become a victum too. I totally dig Gwen, Black Eyed Peas, Eminem, System of a Down, Nine Inch Nails, Avenged Sevenfold, 311.........

  8. Wanbli says I am calling shenanigans on Ashlee Simpson I can listen to and respect everything else you mentioned in this list...but Ashlee is just a pop princess prostitute pimped out by her own father, and she is an abomination outside of the magical effects of a studio soundboard.

  9. LadyC says Nothing wrong wiht liking something mass popular. I loved Toxic by B.S. but alot of these type of songs are pre packaged and produced by someone else so...

  10. CBSchick says well, I consider Gnarls Barkley Pop/Top 40. I like that. Gwen is amazing. Justin Timberlake's Justified album - oh yeah. Natasha Bedingfield's 'Single' is fun. Those are most of my pop endulgances. Thanks for the post.

  11. Spencer Owen says Gwen's "Hollaback Girl" shocked me when I first heard it, which was in the context of: "Oh, wow, this song has reached 1,000,000 downloads on iTunes, maybe I should actually hear it." Something about Gwen's voice is kind of inherently hateable to me, especially on this song, but I LOVE her whispering and the guitar part and the arrangement for horns, and I really do like "This shit is BANANAS!" And I might also add that to have such a hit single that is basically based on the word "shit" amuses me as well.

  12. EmergencyTrap says There are definitely some pop songs I like, many of which have already been mentioned on this thread. But my guilty pleasures lean toward what I call pop-punk but others call emo. I used to love Fall Out Boy (the old stuff, the new album sucks), Taking Back Sunday, Brand New--all that stuff. The angsty teen inside me still digs some of it--for example, I think Taking Back Sunday's MakeDamnSure is awesome. There. I said it. I'm not ashamed.
