I've been had....damnit!

Posted about 5 years ago
As a music lover I always avoid the radio and I generally avoid the videos on mtv and vh1, that is when they play videos. To my shame, not only did I catch a portion of vh1’s top 20 countdown yesterday but they suckered me in as if I were a noob. They played this catchy video, and I don’t even think it was on the countdown, I believe it was one of those “breaking artist” dealios they intersperse between the videos they are counting down. The song was “New Shoes” by Paolo Nutini. The song is a bluesy –rock slash indie type of song. It was pretty cool, so I decided to pick up the cd today. Damn, damn, what a rookie mistake! Now, I won’t go as far as to say the cd is bad. It probably isn’t. Somebody, possibly even another mogger, would enjoy this cd. But…here’s the thing. Single = upbeat blues rock. Rest of album = 70s style ballads. Pissed me off. Why, why(!) would you market a single that is the exact opposite of all the other songs on the cd? First of all, you piss off people like me, who expect that the rest of the cd will be similar. Second of all, you miss out on your actual market, who are not going to buy the cd based off the single.I’m pissed I tell ya. It really burns my ass. I’m mad that I’m out 15 bucks. I’m mad that I fell for it, when I would normally know better. I’m mad that these record companies consistently make such jack-ass decisions. But, I’m ok now. I flipped to the back of the cd insert and looked for the company…it’s Warner Music. Now, those that know me, know that I am uncomfortable in that gray area of downloading music I didn’t pay for. But, right now, I am very, very comfortable in my decision to download 9 songs, for free, that were put out by Warner to make up for 9 songs on the cd that aren’t what was advertised. You want me to buy your music? Stop jacking me around asshole.By the way, here’s the damn video that suckered me out of 15 bucks. Grumble.

  1. 1234chainsaw says He's also known for covering Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" , it's all over YouTube. What a fucking hack.

  2. watchbatteries says They promote that one song so you'll buy the damn album, duh. VH1 also has Mat Kearny, who was a traditional Praise-and-Worship artist who went mainstream, as a "you oughta know" artist, which means phrase like "heartfelt lyrics".

  3. 1234chainsaw says Sorry, I'll rant a bit more. I've watched about 5 different videos of that "Rehab" cover and they're all just fey. While competent, if a bit reedy, this guy's pipes are seriously clogged next to Amy's. But you see comments like this from YouTubers: "he did this song as is last in the set. the band rocked it so hard, it was like sex. jesus i would do the whole band. they rock like no other." What the fuck is wrong with these people?

  4. watchbatteries says @1234: What's wrong with these people? You see, people are sheep, sheeple. They think-no matter how fucking bad the band they like is-that every concert is amazing, because they've never opened their damn ears.

  9. ivylander says There's another way MOG can help with matters like this. Check the posts on this guy before you buy. I think you'll find that they're either along the lines of the "critical" commentary 1234 provided, or else exemplars of the ohmigod-he's-so-hot school of analysis. Sadly, you can still tell a lot about an artiste by the kind of people who are attracted to him/her/them, and why.

  16. chucky says grumble, grumble. You are *all* so right. August, especially, but I'm an impulse kind of buyer. Research? Huh...what's that? I want, I want, I want....and I pay....le sigh. Ivylander, yes - you can tell alot about a musician by their fans - if only I had looked first.

  17. fairportfan says My first wife and i used to refer to such albums as "expensive singles". I remember there was a song played a lot on Georgia Tech campus station WREK at one time - it was *Call the Uh Oh Squad* by Rober Ellis Orall (inspired, i think by a cartoon - Kliban, maybe? - captioned "The Uh Oh Squad", showing a bunch of people standing around some disaster and going "Uh oh!"). Anyway, (this being in the day of vinyl) i happened upon the album (cleverly entitled *Fixation*) in the 50¢ bin at one of my regular used-record stops(usual price for a *good* used album in good shape was about $1 or maybe $2 if it was Something Special in those days). This warned me.

However, i bought the thing, since i wanted that song. Only thing on it worth listening to. (Good ghod, the 10-inch remix/club mix version of that song is going for $39.50 online.

  18. chucky says Jameson, the thought did occur to me. Fairportfan, heh - 50 cents, good on you...haha. $39.50 is mind blowing.

  22. Iren says Ash... Ash..... I thought you knew better than this..... you may not have heard but there is this think called iTunes and often times you can sample 30 seconds from album tracks there... or myspace, where often you can at least listen to a couple of songs... and then on the computer they have these things called websites.... and often times you can preview stuff there.... it's ok I still dig you.. love Eric

  24. justcheez says screw ebay, if you kept the receipt take it back, most shops dont even ask why you're returning the cd. which is helpful, cos i have a tendency to guess if i'll like an album based on the cover and the record label. i don't -often- ever guess correctly.
    Permalink posted 04/01/2007
  25. chucky says justcheez, really? Back when I worked in a record store ...xx years ago (grumble, grumble) we would never except cds back once they were opened. Has that changed? I'm going to call them tomorrow and see if I can return it - that possibility hadn't even occurred to me....sweet.

  27. chulsmith says ash ::: you're an impulse buyer, huh? that's so very un-accountant-ly of you. i'm the opposite - i get information paralyzation when i need to make a purchase - yes, even when it's only a few bucks... also, to address your question as to why a band would release a single that's not representative of their music, this is the music "business" (ie. maximizing profits), they're not ensuring that they're putting out good music. it's very very sad...

No one trusts them anymore, you'd think they'd learn. Anna, Dale, and kb.....bwahahhahahaaaaaaaaaaaaa.....y'all are cracking me up. giggle. justcheez, you mean you don't have to rip through the cellophane and then that annoying plastic tape? I am actually jealous. chrisflew, oh my...haha. I know, I usually try harder but lately I've just had this whole "gimme, gimme" mindset going on. Instant gratification and all that jazz. I then doloaded a few more tracks from his, and was dissappointed by the mediocrity of basicall all the tracks, excepting "these streets" and "new shoes"
