WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Actual real life CDs!! part 2

Posted over 3 years ago
The second CD – Flyleaf – was very interesting. I had never heard of them before. He put it on in the car on our way home and it sounded like an Evanescence knockoff. I didn’t really like it but I decided to re-listen at home, because sometimes music takes a few listens. I have a quirk where I have to see the lyrics to a song before I decided if I like it or will buy it. This has kept me from buying a lot of stuff that I liked on first listen, but that’s another story. Anyway, I popped the CD in when I got home and googled the lyrics. The first search returns turned up a surprise – Flyleaf is a christian band. Michael is an adamant atheist, so I got a good giggle out of that. If he shared my quirk he would not have bought the CD. I listened through it again with the lyrics and I found two songs that weren’t overtly religious and that I actually ended up liking: Fully Alive and I’m So Sick. And, it’s a good thing I did, because I think he’s tossing the CD tomorrow.

  2. LadyC says curious, what about sufjan stevens? it's not christian rock but he's pretty open about his religon (and he's brilliant).

  3. CBSchick says So, he's a few tidbits about Flyleaf for you... the two songs you like are actually the two singles from the album, so you defininitely picked out the best two. Also, this is kinda shitty but whatever - I work at the label that Flyleaf is on, and since they are a new band the record execs thought they could break the band easier by getting them played on Christian radio first and then moving into modern rock stations. So, while they may have some spiritual elements to their music, take that 'christian rock band' as a marketing tactic and not much more than that.

  4. chucky says I don't like being preached to, so I am wary of any religious music. If I feel the lyrics are just positive and not preachy I will listen though. I didn't know that about Sufjan Stevens, because he's new to me. So, I picked the singles huh? I should win a prize or something;) What an interesting tactic for the label to take. I would think it would hurt their credibility somewhat with fans of that particular genre.
