WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

oh! those britches full of stitches

Posted about 1 year ago
Now, don’t laugh. Or laugh, it’s all the same to me. Hrmphf.Like a lot of people that feel the power of music, I’ve always wanted to be able to play a musical instrument. I played the cello in 6th grade very briefly, but that’s the only time I’ve been near an instrument. Earlier this year I got offered a piano for free, all I had to do was pick it up and take it with me when I moved, but come moving day I realized it just wasn’t going to happen. Everything was too rushed and too hectic and I regretted it every damn day. I had fantasies of being the next Billy Joel.Fast forward a bit and I was watching some reality show, similar to American Idol, except it had bands instead of singers. I think it was America’s Next Greatest Band, or some such shit. A handful of bands had an instrument that I wasn’t actually familiar with. This is no surprise, because I’m not big on details – if it sounds good, I’ll listen to it. But, this happened right at a time when I was pretty down and needed some sort of goal to perk me back up. Michael, bless his heart, looked up the instrument because I was talking about how cool it was. It was a mandolin. So, of course, I bought myself a mandolin. That’s how I roll. The night it came in I spent two hours playing with it without a plectrum (fancy word for pick that I learned when I got my mandolin, heh) and got a fantabulous blister on my thumb. I’ve been practicing now for a little over a month and, good god, I suck balls. A mandolin is a double stringed instrument – so it has 8 strings. You have to hit the double strings at the same time and I can’t do it. Also, my fingers are not so nimble, so I’m having a hard time switching between the notes fast enough to play any songs in a recognizable kind of way. Luckily, I’m teaching myself with an Irish folk song book (post title being the song I'm working on now), so no one knows that I’m playing the songs at a third of their normal speed. Haha.Anyways, I suck and I’m having the time of my life. I totally should have decided to do this ten years ago. Now, if any of you know how to play the fricking mandolin, will you tell me how to hit the stupid strings at the same time?

  1. Augusts1 says Wow, a MANDOLIN? Are you sure it's not a MADolin? haha. I can't picture you playing a mandolin but hey, stranger things have happened here in mogland. I'll give you a bit of advice: practice, practice, practice & DON'T give up. You may not be able to play it now but eventually you will. It takes patience, determination & oh, did I say PRACTICE? Daily practice in fact, like set aside an hour a day or maybe 1/2 hr at first to get into a groove. Trust me, I played piano for 5 yrs.(had lessons) when I was growing up, cello for the same & a bit of violin. And you can also just pick it up & play when the mood strikes you apart from your set practice times of course. Go Charles, get funky!

  2. chucky says Oh I'll get funky...just as soon as I can master getting folky. (Get it? Hee Hee, I crack me up.)

  3. Dale says Wow, rock on Ashley! I couldn't help you one bit, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm trying to play guitar for the fifth time, and I was just barely able to pick out a lousy rendition of "Jingle Bells". I'm learning songs from the same book as my 10 year old, who's learning trumpet.

  5. Lyrikhan says you need the plectrum of destiny ;) my uncle is in a bluegrass band (that just got nominated for a grammy - "plug plug":http://mog.com/Lyrikhan/blog_post/129317) so I'm quite familiar with the mandolin....a fine instrument. Keep at it.

  6. chucky says Dale, haha - funny you mention it. Jingle Bells was what really let me know I suck. I learned Jingle Bells the first day. A month later and I still can't play it. It's the "jingle all the way" part that gets me every time. August, :) I heart you. Lyrikhan, haha - the plectrum of destiny - I like it. Ask you grammy nominated uncle how I hit the strings at the same time. :)

  7. amber says good for you! I actually can't play a single note on a single instument (unless you count the controller instruments on Xbox's Rock Band, then I RAWK). However, in a slightly related story, I bought my daughter her first guitar today. It's pink. She wanted wanted the electric one with skulls on it but she got the starter acoustic. Still, it was over $200. She better get a blister too. ;)

  9. chucky says Amber, haha - I also wanted a much swankier instrument than the one I got. Here's to your daughter's blisters!! :) Jill, indeed. :)

  12. Mike the Knife says Practice make semi-perfect, c. And I imagine, with the proper time and effort, you'll be playing the coda from Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" with the best of 'em.

  13. brand X says I don't even know what a mandolin is, but if you are having problems plucking both strings simultaneously, you might not be holding the pick in the best way. Try googling "how to hold a pick," somebody out there, I would guess, has probably put up a page with diagrams and explanations and such. Not that there is really just one perfect way to hold a pick, but learning one persons ideal may help you to find a good way that works for you. Another thing you might try is to make sure you give the strings a good strong attack and follow through until your pick is resting on the next string that is not to be plucked. It might be hard to do this if you are playing very fast, but if you practice it enough you should develop a good picking technique that doesn't require you to actually be so deliberate while you are playing. Like I said, I know fuck-all about the mandolin, so maybe those tips won't help at all, but good luck to you, and keep fuckin' rockin' it!

  16. SA says I must honestly admit I admire you Chucky. I've always wanted to play an instrument (well, the guitar, basically), but I don't start with it because I don't have the patience to start with a new instrument and then the first few months not being able to play a damn thing. But great that you have the guts to take it up, and I'll be jealous of you when all the hard work and frustration pays off and you can actually play an instrument. :)

  17. deadmandeadman says Plucky little chucky playin' the mandolin. That's just way too cool, lady! Augusts1 said it all, but I'm not sure he stressed practice enough, LOL. Its the truth though. Just for laughs tape yourself now, Practice a month or three, and tape yourself again. Etc etc etc. You'll enjoy listenin' to them before you step on stage to accept your first Grammy.

  18. chucky says Mike, my mom dropped by over the holidays and told me to play Led Zepplin. I was like, are you kidding me?! brand x, thanks man. I think I've got the holding the pick part down right but I haven't tried the second idea. I'll try that next time I practice. Troy, haha....I walked right into that one. Joxley, please do! SA, well shucks. :) Go get you a damn guitar already. deadman, haha. Tape myself huh? Not sure the ego could withstand it..haha.

  22. blueone51 says Ashley, that’s great – learning something new just for the hell of it – it keeps the brain flexible. I got a ukulele (not a cheesy tourist one but the real deal) for Christmas. Teaching myself also, but probably much easier for me; only 4 strings and you really only need to learn one Hawaiian song since they pretty much all sound the same. You just change the words each time you play.

  23. TBoom says Kudos to you for going out and getting the instrument you wanted to learn. I can't tell you a damn thing about how to pluck both strings together, I had a hard enough time never learning how to play the guitar I owned 20 years ago. I took up the harmonica about 10 years ago and practiced it constantly to my friends' dismay. Got good enough to play a couple of songs and play along to some CSN then I misplaced the damn thing and haven't played in years. I hope you stay with the mandolin longer than I stayed with the harmonica - I think you inspired me to start playing again. The only thing that I have learned to play recently is Sudoku.

  25. Torch says If you want to build up some confidence - try strumming chords instead of plucking out individual notes. Pretty much any chord on a mandolin is all four (eight) strings, so you just strum through them all. It may be a good break from pickin' and grinnin' and help to build some confidence. Plus, once you learn a few chords - you can play a ton of songs. I'd highly recommend learning "Losing My Religion"
