A real treat this week was video of Jeff Beck's five nights at Ronnie Scott's...
The hair is the same.the same sleevless vest, the deadpan humour.the original "NigelTuffnell" ..(beware further Spinal Tap references)
I suppose i think of Jeff Beck in a similar way to Herbie Hancock..into his sixties, but still innovating, still in a state of evolution.. Come to think of it there is a direct connection the 1968 movie "Blow-Up" ..Herbie Hancock wrote the title music, and Jeff made his iconic guitar smashing appearance with "the Yardbirds" ,at the "Ricky Tic"(aka the 100club)..Janet Street Porter dancing in massive loon pants...
back to the present.. This man is so dynamic in his approach,so varied ,tender and melodic ,no slave to technique ,as he seems to have trancended it. He can coax many a non-guitar like sound out of that blonde (54?) Strat'..
This showcase included two stellar female performers, equally well-matched to Beck's eclectic approach.. Imogen Heap, who's song i recognise ,but i must confess did not know much about (i've just been checking out the beautiful"hide and seek")They compliment each other perfectly...
the other is Joss Stone, who sounds like she 's from New Orleans ,(but is from somewhere in Devon ) another perfect match-up....hopefully this set will be out on C.D. soon..."Train kept a rollin'"
