Alejandro Escovedo in Montclair

Posted almost 5 years ago
Man, oh, man what a gig in Montclair. We weren't able to show up until about midway through the opener, Diana Jones. There were2 chairs left, kind of wedged into the corner of the balcony. I'm pretty bad at estimating crowd sizes, but the sold-out crowd looked to be between 200-300 to me.Susan Voelz gets some glorious noise from her violin. David Pulkingham is one heckuva player. The three instruments just sounded fantastic. And the voice. Alejandro's wonderful, expressive, voice.I can recall snippets of the setlist. Much of the order is not preserved. He told some great stories. I could just listen to him talk for hours. There were 2 new songs from the album he's writing with Chuck Prophet, recording to begin in June. Great stories leading into them. One was called "Slow Down". The other (I think it was the other one; I'mgetting old) was about trying to share the feeling that he had growing up with the music of the 60s.Somewhere in the middle of the show they walked out into the aisle of the church and played unmiked. Still sounded great up in the balcony. "Broken Bottle" was one of these."Baby's Got New Plans", "Rosalie", "Arizona", "Everybody Loves Me", "I Wish I Was Your Mother".Nice story about his wife Kim, and how she came to write the lyrics of "Dear Head on the Wall"."Castanets" was also preceded by a story of its genesis.Someone up in the balcony called out for "Velvet Guitar". The same guy, or maybe someone else, asked if Al could keep playing until 2am. Which I guess Al took for a song request, and boy am I glad. As part of the encores, they played "Pissed Off 2am", but not before telling us a storyabout where it came from. And apparently they haven't played it for a while, because they needed to "rehearse" for a nimute or two, locate the key, recall the parts. But then when they played it, it was fantastic.Last song was a great Sway. Al left the stage while his compadres played out for another minute or so.
