See below to downloadMy mom works for Continental Airlines, and as anyone with family in the travel industry will confirm, this is a boon for aspiring world travelers, especially those of us who are, erm, monetarily challenged. For pennies on the dollar we "buddies" (or, in the biz, "
non-revs") do our best to globetrot on threadbare budgets, flying standby and often getting stuck somewhere along the way. So it was that in April of 1998 that I hopped a flight to Newark then drove to Princeton University for my first Jason Molina gig, whose band at the time was
Songs: Ohia. While talking with Jason after the show I mentioned that, since he wasn't touring the South at the time, I came up from Florida just to catch him play. It wasn't til a few years later that I trekked to Cork, Ireland to see his show with
Glen Hansard that he believed me.All this is to say that I'm a long-time fan of Jason's work, and have caught him every tour since (with the exception of the one with
Arab Strap, which I spaced out on and missed … doh!).This performance at
The Echo was the last of his 2006 US summer tour, though he'll be
back on the road again in the fall. Eight of the 12 songs in this set come from four
Magnolia Electric Co. albums:
Fading Trails (to be released September 12),
What Comes After The Blues, the
Hard To Love A Man EP, and the
self-titled album. The second song is unreleased, the seventh is from a
7" single, "Sweet Lucy" is a
Michael Hurley tune and the last song is … well, I've never heard it before. Perhaps it's from the
forthcoming solo album? Jason's planning on releasing five (!) albums this year alone. Copies of the new MEC album
Fading Trails as well as the new solo record
Let Me Go Let Me Go Let Me Go (street date: August 22) were for sale on the tour, but were gone by the time I got there. (Though I understand that they can be gotten now via the
Secretly Canadian site.) Jason also tells me that he's looking to do residencies, ideally a month long, with performances once a week. If anyone has suggestions on a venue that might be interested in supporting this kind of thing, drop me a line and I'll pass it along to him. Hit me up especially if you're in the LA area: Mom just told me she might be retiring from Continental soon!
