Electronic Music has no Soul

Posted almost 5 years ago
My first post, and it's probably been done before! Maybe a bit controversial but I'm just after peoples' opinions on what specific piece of electronic music has convinced them that it is as beautiful as any lyric or melody created by more conventional artists. The tune I've posted has been edited, not because I don't like the rest of the track it's just, for me, the ending (trying not to sound too pretentious) takes me somewhere I can't explain in words. OK, that does sound pretentious, but it came on my iPod when I was driving my car on the way to do something really mundain and it made it worth the drive.Towards the end of the clip, if you listen really carefully (I hope it's not just me!) you can hear a voice that seems to be singing "yeah!". It kind of reminds me of past days when I literally was shouting "YEAH!!"....For whatever reason.

  1. skjs says About time you posted something ;-) I have no doubt about it. Alberto Balsam by Aphex Twin. It has soul and more than matches anything I'd consider conventional. You could have a fistful of such tracks. In fact I'm going to post a fistful of them. On my page, of course :-) ~8Tm488OlCpU.mp3~

  2. Girlcrawl says Great track, and welcome to MOG! To answer your inquiry: Would Colourbox's self-titled debut qualify? Love the Aphex Twin track skjs added! Beautiful tracks would be Nova Nova - 'La Chanson De Roland'; Yuka Honda - 'Night Diving' (from Memories Are My Only Witness cd). Here's a Leggo Beast track with spunk: ~lMJoDemnHeM.mp3~

  4. Lord Alfreston says Loving both those tracks, would have liked to have heard all of the LFO one. My choice would be anything from Boards of Canada's first album, early Black Dog and Susumu Yokota. I see you've got Grinning Cat but Sakura is the album to have for soulful ambient loveliness. I wanted to post a track but can't freakin' well work out how to do it. Any advice?

  5. ccmr30 says Er....there should be a link or an 'upload mp3' button available when you add a post, I think. As for Grinning Cat, I was lent the album by an alcoholic, mentally disturbed ex work colleague (!) and I just ripped the tracks I liked. I'll check out Sakura. I shall post some other tracks when I get a chance, but yes, BOC 's first album is a classic. Peacock Tail off Campfire has got to be up there somewhere. The beginning of the LFO track is pretty much a 4 to the floor techno workout. One other random track that springs to mind is Marbles by Plastikman. Not so much ambient, although quite minimal. For me it's one of the most, dare I say it, intelligent acid house tracks I've ever heard. The way it builds and builds is just sublime.

  6. ccmr30 says Girlcrawl, Thanks for the post. Not having heard some of the tracks you mention I couldn't say if they qualify or not. Then again, I'm not the judge so if you think they do then that's all that matters! I'm just glad that people are offering track suggestions so that I can see what kind of this type of music moves people.

  7. Lord Alfreston says Thanks cc but there doesn't appear to be the mp3 upload when I make a comment on another post, I triple checked when I made this one. There is if I want to upload to a post but there must be a way if everybody else is doing it. Maybe I'm just dumb! Anyway you have to be in the right mood for grinning cat and I haven't been in it yet, or maybe I just need to be a mentally disturbed alcoholic.
