Modest Mouse's Dashboard: An objective defense.

Hear it here: http://www.sonymusic.com/clips/selection/fu/704969/704969_01_01_full_smil.movOkay, this is why I hate hipsters. The minute some indie darlings-turned buzz band skirt the line between ambition and accessibility, the elitist cry-hards sing betrayal and because of their so-called cred, like-minded media and dronish casual listeners fall in line ready with torches to flambe' their once-beloved heroes. How sad and pathetic. No offense to anyone out there who still possesses their own thoughts on the matter. What's the matter? Modest Mouse have passed the point of no return and continue to experiment/evolve like so many artists before them like The Cure, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and Wilco. Some people confuse having mass appeal with becoming middle-of-the-road.When magazine editors, bike messengers, frat guys and stockbrokers alike think Float On or Dashboard is an awesome song, it's a testament to the band, their success and artistic acheivement, not a sign that they're going downhill because they reached some of the mainstream. It would be ridiculous for them to make The Lonesome Crowded West again. It would be ridiculous for them to revisit any previous efforts. It's evolution, baby.

  1. LambCurry666 says Amen, brother. Good News was evidence that indie bands can actually go major label and maintain their integrity and appeal to a lot of people.

  2. Zeroskilz says I agree totally. Besides, when did we start judging an entire album from one song? Was Float On really the best song on Good News?

  3. Rawkkiddoh says Good point Zero, The World At Large was the one for me.

  4. Scarlett Echo says Quote: Some people confuse having mass appeal with becoming middle-of-the-road. I couldn't agree more. Whenever a so-called fan of a band bashes them for achieving some success, I want to scream. The good ones are in it for the sake of making music. I'm pleased for them when their efforts are recognized. I don't shit on them for getting somewhere.

  5. Scarlett Echo says The Ocean Breathes Salty...The View...Satin in a Coffin... Mmm. I love this album. Float On was definitely a good track but I prefer to take this album as a whole.

  6. cbowers says Yeah, and the softer selections off this are superb: Blame it on the Tetons (forget about it) and Milo is like this heavenly post-modern Beautiful Boy. I'm going to listen to these right now.

  7. River Lethe says I posted about this a little the other day. I actually think Good News is their best album so far. I loved World's Apart by Trail of Dead, but everyone bashed it because it didn't sound like Source Tags. Decemberists, the same. So right on, for calling people out on it.
