How sad and pathetic. No offense to anyone out there who still possesses their own thoughts on the matter. What's the matter? Modest Mouse have passed the point of no return and continue to experiment/evolve like so many artists before them like The Cure, Radiohead, Smashing Pumpkins, and Wilco. Some people confuse having mass appeal with becoming middle-of-the-road.When magazine editors, bike messengers, frat guys and stockbrokers alike think Float On or Dashboard is an awesome song, it's a testament to the band, their success and artistic acheivement, not a sign that they're going downhill because they reached some of the mainstream. It would be ridiculous for them to make The Lonesome Crowded West again. It would be ridiculous for them to revisit any previous efforts. It's evolution, baby.
