Cover Me

Posted about 4 years ago
I haven't been writing here lately, both because I've been too busy and because I'm self-conscious about writing repeatedly about what I like best. But today, with a light rain falling on the paper walls of the future, I don't care. A while back I mentioned my excitement at the new record by Broken Social Scene's Kevin Drew. I've come to realize that, of all the bands of their Pitchfork-inflected era, Broken Social Scene and Bloc Party are the ones I come back to with the most bliss. And that makes them, in my world, the heirs of my all-time favorite groups. Having recently seen the sublime film ??Control?? about the life of Joy Division front man Ian Curtis twice, I've been in a Joy Division-New Order mood, revisiting their music in a big way. How perfect, then, that I'm getting to hear a gorgeous cover of New Order's "Age of Consent" performed by Kevin Drew. I'm pretty sure that anyone who likes New Order will be swayed by this one. Enjoy.

  1. Masoo says I've been listening to Kevin Drew's solo album some lately ... OK, I've been listening to tracks from it, that's how I listen to stuff any more. The fact that I can remember listening to him suggests he's got something that gets my attention.

  2. cbertsch says It does work well as an album, for what that's worth. Broken Social Scene's records remind me of those classic sample-heavy hip-hop albums where 2/3 of the "songs" were too slight to stand alone, but worked great as palate cleansers between main courses. There are a few songs that I adore and play over and over. But I'm especially happy to hear them in context.
