MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

This record doesn't pretend to be important. It's just plain fun.

I really do like Gwen Stefani's song "Cool." It reminds me of someone, and the sentiment behind it is nice. The strange 80s-ness of it doesn't hurt, either. Therefore, when I saw a copy of "Love Angel Music Baby" in a used music store I decided to buy it. And I'm so glad I did. Gwen Stefani does not try to be artistically important here, nor does she pretend that she has created something of great intellectual and emotional depth. She revels in her shallow lyrics, rips nearly all her style from the 80s in what can only be termed highway robbery, hell, she even samples "Fiddler on the Roof" and Notorious BIG. Like I said, she's not pretending like she's created something we haven't heard before, which is part of this record's charm. There is not a single song on this record that doesn't make me want to move and laugh. It's so light-hearted, and that feels good right now. So, Go Gwen. You keep ripping off the 80s, girl.

  1. mktackabery says you tapped into why gwen is cool I think . . . she just is who she is. I always thought she was putting it on until I saw her do some interview thing where she talked about how the Police were her favorite band, and then she had to go interview Sting and got totally tongue-tied and acted like a complete geek. I kind of fell in love with her at that moment.

  2. garrick says I was given Love Angel Music Baby as a Xmas gift last year. My first instinct was to laugh, as I beleived it to be a gag gift. Then I listened to it in the car and it TOTALLY grabbed me. Yes, it's radio pop, it's got mass appeal, but it's NOT one of those typical here-today-gone-tomorrow radio pop releases. It's clever, the samples and the 80's nods help give it some intelli-cred, and the work as a whole really comes off as being Gwen - it's all her - as opposed to being compiled corporate pop music with gwen's face on the cover. I dare say I love it. Harajuku Girls especially. You said it - Go Gwen!

  3. Rawkkiddoh says Carmen, I am becoming a Gwen Stefani fan. I listened to The Real Thing and loved it. If you like that, you should check out The Other Two and You. It was a side project from 2 of the members of New Order, and it sounds very similar.
