One day back in 1999, John Roderick decided to travel from Amsterdam to Istanbul.
By foot.
He set out on May 4th, supplied with some extra clothes and an atlas, and began his 50 kilometer a day trek, hiking across the mountains and valleys of ten different countries, and arrived on Sept 21st of that year, five months after his departure, at his final destination.
I find this pretty impressive.
These days, Roderick heads a band called The Long Winters. They’ve got three albums out, the most recent of which is Putting the Days to Bed (2006). It’s a great album. I had the chance to see them at the Showbox not too long ago and they put on a really fun high-energy show. Ben Gibbard came out to play drums during one song, which is what you are seeing below. If you are already a fan, a DVD of their performances (this one included) should be out soon.
