For the first time since I can remember, I'm finished my Christmas shopping almost two weeks before the day. I almost have to pinch myself to see if I'm really dreaming and will wake up to find it's really Christmas Eve at 6 p.m. and I haven't started yet.
I actually did that one year. Left shopping till Christmas Eve. Not 6 p.m. mind you, but it might as well have been for all the selection there was.
I've learned that the only way to get the most popular gift your kids want, is to assume a gorilla type attitude, be willing to sleep out in the rain or snow, have a good assortment of karate moves at the ready, and give it your all. Such were the cases when a particular Transformer was the one that had to be found. Or Elmo, of all things. (I hate Elmo)
I've learned that the only way to get the gift your wife wants is to put real meaning into it, no matter what it is. So if you show up on Christmas morning with a vacuum cleaner like I remember my Dad doing one year, you can expect a chilly response. The thought was there, but it wasn't the right one. (see video)
I've learned that hinting doesn't work, because in the process I've also learned how transparent I am.
I've learned that no matter how obvious a gift is wrapped, I mustn't blurt out any guesses. Being right just isn't worth it!
I've learned that being patient while each familiy member opens a gift, and then participating in the oohs and ahs, hugs and kisses, is so much better than ripping and tearing on my own just to see what's inside that 30 pound square box with my name on it.(guys will appreciate how hard that is)
Finally, I've learned that the true meaning of Christmas is far better than the pale by comparison facsimiles we throw together every year. We live this life on the surface of our emotions, inner selves, and beliefs most of the time, but at christmas, I like to think we all allow ourselves to be exposed somewhat. I know I do as evidenced by my Christmas posts here.
And I feel good about it, if that counts at all.
Anyway, I trust each of you is also daring enough to look into the deeper aspects of the season as well.
This is one of my favorite Christmas songs. Fear it not.

I loved this post... every sentiment beautifully put... with a few chuckles thrown in and then I played the song...made me smile and feel good from the inside out... thank you
ok ... so I'm the weirdest chick ... EVER! 2 of my favorite gifts have been ... my Kitchenaid stand mixer ... and my Dyson vacuum.
Go figure ... LOL!! :)
You forgot to mention that you save children from themselves, daily. That you give hope and affection to kids that have little of either and that you, despite bad days and outside negativities continue to inspire and educate.
Obviously, I think you rock.
PERFECT!!! :D
You are now officially a Christmas' presents expert!
Guerilla tactics ha ah ha ha ha ha!
Wonderful post.
Cause Christmas is all in the heart, that's where the feeling starts
And like a fire inside, it touches every part
'Cause Christmas is all in the heart
And even if no white snow falls, that's all right because
The joy can still be found, wherever you are
'Cause Christmas is all, all in the heart.
