I had this thought today to post something about the technology of listening, and how it's changed so much over the years. What's your main listening mode? iPod? PC system? Radio? Home stereo? And so forth. With Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club (huh??) doing the background with their song Video Killed the Radio Star, I thought it would fit nicely.

Then I went looking for the song and its lyrics. The song I found in my vinyl collection, but on my way to the lyrics which I had to go online for, I discovered that the song was made famous by a British band known as the Buggles. It apparently was the first video posted on MTV in 1981, which means The Buggles probably took the credit for the song.

In fact, the song was written and first recorded by Bruce Wooley and the Camera Club back in 1979.

Here's a link to some info on the one album band that included Geoffrey Downes, Trevor Horn, and Thomas Dolby.

P.S. if you're one of the millions whose sole listening experience is through iPod buds or another form of headphone gear, take a break and find the nearest living room stereo system. With the speakers properly spaced and the volume not too loud but not too low, the difference will have you waking up the neighbours for the forseeable future.

Video Killed the Radio Star

I heard you on the wireless back in Fifty

Two Lying awake intent at tuning in on you.

If I was young it didn't stop you coming through.

Oh-a oh

They took the credit for your second symphony.

Rewritten by machine and new technology, and now I understand the problems you can see.

Oh-a oh

I met your children

Oh-a oh

What did you tell them?

Video killed the radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

Pictures came and broke your heart.

Oh-a-a-a oh

And now we meet in an abandoned studio.

We hear the playback and it seems so long ago.

And you remember the jingles used to go.

Oh-a oh

You were the first one.

Oh-a oh

You were the last one.

Video killed the radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far

Oh-a-aho oh, O

h-a-aho oh

Video killed the radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

In my mind and in my car, we can't rewind we've gone to far.

Pictures came and broke your heart, put the blame on VTR.

You are a radio star.

You are a radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

Video killed the radio star.

(You are a radio star.)

I've known this song for a long time, as a Buggles song.  I never knew it existed in some form before that.  Very cool piece of trivia!
