WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Once upon a time....

Posted 19 days ago

....in a land far, far away, the people of that land listened to strange but prophetic sounds leading them to a distant and strange future.

Sounds like these:

The Spencer Davis Group - Gimme Some Lovin

Traffic - Paper Sun

Spirit - Natures Way

Blues Magoos - Ain't got Nothin Yet

The Count Five - Psychotic Reaction

As I recall, the skinny on that space/time interval was: "If you remember it, you weren't there." Well, I must have gotten unstuck and drifted to another dimension, since I remember these tunes. (But then, I never did any psychoactive drugs, either.)

speakin' of "the skinny", Traffic was my first concert, but "Mr. Skin" definitely came along on some crazy rides (Spirit).

Spirit gave me a real education in the pop music world. When I was in college and playing in a band that was good enough to have "management" (i.e., a guy who would find us gigs in obscure places in Pennsylvania and keep telling us how great we were), our manager was promoting a Spirit gig in our college town. ("Dr. Sardonicus" was inexplicably huge there.) It was only natural that our band should be invited to the Holiday Inn afterwards. By then, Spirit was down to Ed Cassidy, Randy California and pickups. We sat in one of their two rooms as one of the guitarists lay on his bed making out with one of the local skanks and joints were passed around. I ended up watching TV with the keyboard player, a nice Jewish boy from Long Island who told me he was finishing out this tour, then going back to school. Everybody seemed exhausted. The evening kinda took the glamour out of the rock and roll life....

Back then it took an epic night of overdoing to produce a hangover - which probably, in retrospect, wasn't as good a thing as it seemed at the time....
