WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

SUTC - But Covering Who?

"When the Saints Go Marching In" Is a slightly modified version of the original song written and published in 1896 called "When the Saints ARE Marchiing In." The original was written by Katherine Purvis, the daughter of a Methodist minister and music teacher at the seminary of a Methodist Episcopal Church in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Virgil Stamps wrote the music and Luther G. Presley adjusted the lyrics in 1927, and it became what we all know today as probably the best known spiritual ever written.

It's been covered more times than can be recounted here, but I just came across this version yesterday as a bonus track on the Van Morrisson CD "Avalon Sunset." In this one you hear Morrison naming some of the Saints, an adjustment that gives it depth and meaning for anyone who understands the history and significance of those named.

This version is beautiful and haunting, a strange description for this particular song.

Thank you MusicRX for linking me to this.  Anyone who says that Van is not a soulman has got to argue with me.
