Reliving the "wonder years"

Posted over 5 years ago
I went to NYC this past weekend to visit my brother who also happens to work in Albany... and since I was going up to Albany with him anyway I decided to see the band that fueled all of my teenage sex fantasies - Duran Duran. They still have some life in 'em, those boys, and I had a great time watching them trip through a "Greatest" lite that night. Highlights of the show: Simon licking his fingers seductively during "Come Undone", John leaning down over me and the girl next to me (I was in the front row) to listen to see if we could actually carry a tune, watching fill-in guitarist Dom Brown (who replaced Andy Taylor for this mini-tour) blow the crowd away on with his (imho) superior axe skills, and seeing Roger twirl his stick... Lessons learned: don't laugh at rockstars when they can see you doing it. Check. Always go VIP. Check. Make sure to take good friends with you so that you can indulge your urge for running commentary. Check. Make sure you've located all the good watering holes PRE-show. Check. All in all a good time. If you've forgotten exactly how good Duran was and still is... well, go grab a CD or two - the latest, Astronaut is better than you think - you won't be disappointed.

  1. I'm a Believer says They are still performing? I totally concur with you...why is it that we are always so happy yet so embarassed to see old groups make a comeback? I think people should retire on top.

  2. callabriel says Yeah, the boys are still going strong. I actually have them to thank for my renewed interest in music and shows in general. I saw a show last summer and said to myself "I need to do this more often". I'm not doing it as often as I'd like to... but I have seen DD again, as well as The Lovemakers and Cherry Poppin' Daddies. I missed Scissor Sisters and Chris Isaak though :( Are you a member of Fiyawata? I'm always interested in hearing new music... I troll MySpace and Pandora for new stuff all the time... iTunes gives me headaches though, so not so much there. If the band is on MySpace maybe you can send me a link?

  4. callabriel says Andy did just leave... and I have to say, I think that was a good move for him AND they band. I'm just sayin'! Yeah, LeBon still has his chops. He actually sounds better now... they all do. I think the music is the most important thing now. You know that in the 80's it was all about what was going on offstage!

  5. Brett Schieber says Yes, Duran Duran has never really gone away. They've been through a few lineup changes (only Nick Rhodes - the keyboardist that looks like Andy Warhol - and Simon LeBon - the singer - have been there since the beginning and have never left). Even though some of their cds haven't been successful, they keep releasing them. Just because they didn't sell, doesn't mean that they are not great cds. In fact, that usually means the opposite! Their cd called "Pop Trash" isn't even on iTunes and I have no idea why. The songs "Starting To Remember", "Pop Trash Movie", and "Lady Xanax" are amazing. Anyway, they never went away and I'm very happy of that fact since I enjoy most everthing they've ever done.
