normally the phrase "cover of a bob dylan song" sends shudders down my spine. like 99.999% of all beatles, stones, and guns 'n roses covers, the majority of dylan covers are really satan's covert attempts to destroy the music industry, one american idol contestant at a time (not to be confused with bret michael's not-so-covert attempt to destroy television, one std-riddled emotionally damaged hobag at a time). but this time, sufjan and the 50 squillion other artists from the i'm not there soundtrack make a little traction on the side of all that is just and wonderful in the world.

Ring them bells, ye heathen From the city that dreams, Ring them bells from the sanctuaries Cross the valleys and streams, For they're deep and they're wide And the world's on its side And time is running backwards And so is the bride.

Ring them bells St. Peter Where the four winds blow, Ring them bells with an iron hand So the people will know. Oh it's rush hour now On the wheel and the plow And the sun is going down Upon the sacred cow.

Ring them bells Sweet Martha, For the poor man's son, Ring them bells so the world will know That God is one. Oh the shepherd is asleep Where the willows weep And the mountains are filled With lost sheep.

Ring them bells for the blind and the deaf, Ring them bells for all of us who are left, Ring them bells for the chosen few Who will judge the many when the game is through. Ring them bells, for the time that flies, For the child that cries When innocence dies.

Ring them bells St. Catherine From the top of the room, Ring them from the fortress For the lilies that bloom. Oh the lines are long And the fighting is strong And they're breaking down the distance Between right and wrong.

this version has been in heavy rotation for me since the album came out. And I shamefully admit that do not really care for the original version (at least I didn't at first)...

I love Jim James & Calexico's version of "Going to Acapulco" and Glen Hansard & Marketa Inglova's version of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere"

the soundtrack is pretty great, especially considering how dismal most covers are (particularly dylan covers). and the songs are mostly b-sides and other songs that most people don't really pay much attention to, though there are some bigger ones on there. but no "hurricane" or "hard rain" or "these times they are a'changin" (for the most part...)

i LOVE this cover.

i first heard it in our campus radio rotation and then found it on the internet somewhere for download...i actually never bothered listening to the rest of the soundtrack.

but i love love love the piano near the end. the whole thing is so lovely.

although, okay, i'll admit i've never even heard the original. it would be nice to compare.
