WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Josh White

Posted over 2 years ago
I was totally dismayed to find that absolutely no one has MOG'ged about Josh White. He was a phenomenal blues/folk/gospel/everything musician. He's done everything from political folk to piedmont blues (Bob Dylan was very inspired by him) to pre-WWII gospel blues to country blues to something that is indefinably Josh White. He, to me, is the ultimate definition of "the blues": there's no electric gutiar, no band, no drummer, no back up singers, just him and his guitar singing about the horrors of the Jim Crow South, betraying women, and his broken, hard life.

  2. dermahrk says Sounds good. Josh is one of those names I've read for years but never heard. You mentioned it was just him and his guitar - but this track is just him and (his?) piano. Was he a keyboard player too?

  3. caliscrnwrtr says well, yeah, there's always a bit of lee-way there. most of his piedmont blues stuff and later stuff is just mostly just him and a guitar. the gospel stuff is a bigger, fuller sound, and his very late and very early blues has more back-up instruments. he's not acoustic bob dylan, but you can see where dylan got his start...
