WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The Mathematics of MOG

with credit (and/or apologies) to "Jonh Ingham":http://mog.com/Jonh_Ingham/blog_post/128571#comments and "indiepixie":http://mog.com/indiepixie, here goes... being a first post, i'll rely on a crutch. math is a lot of things, but above all it's a language - and often it's the only one where i can be remotely succinct. i was curious about how MOG posts break down, by topic. this is by no means scientific - the numbers i got on MOG came from counting the pages of posts that turn up by selecting each genre and All Time. (this gives a count of 6105 total pages of posts vs All genres All Time 8219. anyway, i think i'm in the ballpark.) having done that, i was curious about my own breakdown (from 4060 songs), so here it is (with some changes to fit everything into MOG's list of genres - i.e. my World music consists of exclusively of Irish and Norteno, and Other=Friends of Dean Martinez).what's the point. maybe i'm the only one that finds this sort of thing interesting, in which case, at least listen to the song, if you haven't heard it - it deserves a post of its own.what i take away is that Cody B wasn't kidding when he suggested the need for a "country 101":http://mog.com/Cody_B/blog_post/31368 that, and i'm surprised by the dominance of rock. is this just a result of "rock" being an easy, catch-all category, or do moggers really just like to rock out? in either case - what do you cue up when you want to rock?

  1. Cody B says I see you're not getting served,sir...Lemme see what we can do. I think we'd have to cast a wide net and call it Twang 101..include bluegrass, old time, alt. ,classic, etc. But I think there will be a few takers.

  2. dermahrk says I for one would love to see more Twang 101 on MOG. Welcome. Being a CPA, I appreciate your statistics. I once did a post detailing the decline in MOG traffic (by countint pages published per week) when they were having more severe problems with their software.

  3. brz says Cody- my post wasn't lamenting the lack of twang so much as it was expressing my suprise at how much rock there is. i think this must, in part, be because it serves as a generic, catch-all. i know when i added up my songs, i lumped together alternative (which imo is pretty much a generic, catch-all of its own now), punk, metal, and surf to get my rock count. whatever the explanation for the preponderance of rock, i think the breakdown actually suits me well, as i keep up much less with rock on my own. as far as twang 101 goes, i think i'm ready for it now... dermahrk- i'm glad to know i'm not the only one... regarding twang or having a penchant for numbers. i'd like to see your decline in traffic post. thanks also for the welcome. now that i've gotten the first post out of the way, i'll aim to be more ambitious.
