David Bazan's Forthcoming Album...eventually

Posted almost 4 years ago

This post was inspired by Eric5776 who mentioned a forthcoming album... According to davidbazan.com, a full length debut album with his new band "David Bazan's Black Cloud" is in the works for early 2009, which will be released by the new label he signed with, Barsuk Records. The "band" is really supposed to just be him playing all of the instruments on the album and then he's going to bring 5 people on tour with him (I think he should convince Damien Jurado to go…). I can't wait!

I felt like his solo album, "Fewer Moving Parts" was his best work to date. I was happy to hear him move away from Pedro the Lion's focus on religion and his vocals in "Fewer" were more powerful and less restrained. I love his raw, understated approach in Pedro the Lion but "Fewer Moving Parts" allowed him to show the world that he could be a force on his own. He seemed less hesitant and more forthwright about what he was trying to say and accomplish.

I can only hope that we see more of this on his new album! For diehard fans who can't wait until next year, he does have a dvd coming out called "Alone at the Mic," it's a short film by Bob Andrews and David Bazan, the release date is set for October 14, 2008. It's supposed to be made up of performances from his home, some interviews and just him being candid….sounds like a must-see.

I love this video but have not been able to find a full version of David Bazan covering "As My Guitar Gently Weeps," which is one of my all-time favorite Beatles songs.

Rawk: since you hadn't heard of him I had to add my favorite Pedro the Lion song, plus it seems like a fitting time to listen to the song since summer is drawing to a close...

I have never seen this video.  Its' cool to see a Bazan video. BrokenGirl, I would say that you and I are probably up there as close to the # 1 Pedro/Bazan fan.   I have seen PTL/Bazan at least 9 or 10 times.  I remember I saw The Charlatans UK at the 9:30 Club and the same night, I treked over to the Black Cat in DC to see PTL open for Ida.

His song writing is exceptional.  My favorite songs are "Diamon Ring", "Priest & Paramedics" and "I Am Always the One Who Calls".  Bazan plays great live because he interacts w/ the audience and always has a Q&A session.  His song writing reminds me of Hayden - if you haven't heard of Hayden, you must check out everything he does.

There's a great blog that posted some new Bazan songs on the tour he did last October, one of which includes "Hallelujah" which is supposed to be on the new album.  That and "Please Baby Please" are great -

A really good story comes from back in '98 when Far (featuring Jonah Matranga) played one of their last shows at the Metro Cafe - a venue that PTL played a few times.  I was very close to mentioning to my new "Fix", Pedro The Lion.  Knowing Jonah's taste and that he absolutely digs Hayden, I thought it was my duty to inform him of this great new band.  As fate would have it in 2004, Jonah's solo project Onelinedrawing covered "Rapture" a PTL song on a Jade Tree comp.  I was thrilled to see that happen.

On a more "that's a bummer" note, Pedro The Lion played CMJ in NYC back in probably 2002 or 2003.  They played Maxwell's in NJ and it was a 6:00 show w/ an opener.  I was working late in the city but rushed to the venue at 7:10.  I rushed in and saw only the last 2 or 3 songs - I missed the entire set!  I was bummed.

As you can see from me going on and one about Pedro The Lion and Bazan, I'm a big fan, probably one of the few bands that I will buy still anything they put out.

I did check out some of the sites with his new music, it's going to be awesome!  I am SO jealous that you've seen them so many times!  I've never seen them live, (I live in Boise so yeah, no one comes here) but I met him once in Eugene, OR at some friends' house.  It was a brief, hello, type thing but I was super-excited.

I really like all of your song picks!  And I haven't heard Hayden, I can't wait to check him out!

I always love hearing my favorite bands cover my favorite songs, this is off the PTL subject but my most memorable cover-song moment was when I was at a Doug Martsch concert (of Built to Spill) and he started playing "Pale Blue Eyes" (Velvet Underground), it's one of my all-time favorite songs.  It was amazing.

Yeah, it really does stink not to be able to see your favorite artists because of where you live.  I now live two hours from Boston and with gas prices the way they are, I miss a lot of shows that I would pay big bucks for.  It's just not worth spending $80 in gas.

Perhaps I'll post about Hayden and give you some suggestions on tracks to check out.  He's definitely more of an unrequited love song type of writer but has an excellent way of story telling in it too.
