...and a little bit of blood. That's what I think of whenever I hear The Velvet Underground's "I'm Sticking With You". I'm talking about my favorite scene from "Morvern Callar," a movie adapted from a novel by Scottish writer Alan Warner. The 1995 film stars Samantha Morton as the title character, an odd lass who steals her boyfriend's funeral money after he commits suicide. Watch this clip of her um, destroying the evidence (note: this has been edited by whomever uploaded it, but you get the picture).
Morvern is never without her headphones and walkman (creepy coincidence: from the neck up I looked a lot like her walking to work this morning) because it's the last thing her boyfriend left behind before killing himself (aww). The soundtrack to the movie is reflective of the mixtape. There is a lot of Can because the book's author is such a big fan. For a full break down of the mixtapes and a few more movie details click here.
Did I scare you guys? Has anyone seen this movie?

I recall when it came out but didn't see it. Now I'm curious! Looks pretty bizarre . . . .
Have you heard the Velvet's Not A Young Man Anymore - great unreleased track

Very nice. This is right up my alley. Who can go wrong with the Underground. Funny, I was just thinking about a Lou Reed song today at work. Gonna have to watch this. I love things slightly outside the scope( o.k. really far out there).
August: it is a bit bizarre. i might have a skewed perspective since i read the book and then saw the movie. a few reviews i came across described how it was difficult to get into Morvern's head.
planet mondo: i don't think i've heard the song before. thanks! love the sound qualities.
Beautiful, not all art needs to be universal.
psuedomacabre: watch and enjoy the far-outness.
i agree with Augusts : i am intrigued by the craziness of it all. on my rental list.
Thank you much!
You've totally made me want to find this movie! Thanks again btw for reading my blog. I appreciate long term readers like yourself :) Hope all is well!
Hey! Thanks for coming to check out this wee little post of mine. Great to hear from you. Things are great over here--I would send well wishes your way but if memory serves me right there's no need cuz you have Hot Chip autographed vinyl!!! :)
This post & the ensuing comments are the kinds of thing that makes the MOGOS so great.
I totally forgot how much I loved that movie. Netflix queue here I come! Plus I totally love connecting movies with songs...
Forgot to say that I love Samantha Morton, she's a very underrated actress. . . .
this video is weird, but i think i might need to see it.
thanks, DMDM
ongoingly: i think we're the only ones who have already seen it. i don't own it and i think i need to see it again. netflix, get ready!
August: I had to look up what other roles she was in. i didn't even realize it was her in jesus' son (another good/bizarre movie).
oh wow, jesus' son is a great bizarre movie! i am on this like white on rice now
yeah..and remember how Jack Black is in that??
oh yes i do!
Georgie: Does everything you touch turn to shit? Does this happen to you every time?
FH: [weeping] No wonder everybody calls me "Fuck-Head."
Georgie: It's a name that's going to stick.
FH: I realize that.
Georgie: "Fuck-Head" is gonna ride you to your grave.
FH: I already said so, I agreed with you in advance.
hahha!! you got me dying to watch that NOW!
Not heard of Jesus' Son, I'll have to check that out. I've seen her in Minority Report, In America, The Libertine(w/Johnny Depp, highly recommend it) & Control. She was great in all of those.
Bizarre.
bizarre in the best bizarre way!
August: i'm horrible. i still have yet to see Control!
You are not! I am the horrible one, I saw it online w/o paying since it never came up here(& I made a special request to the arthouse theater owner too & he still didn't show it, the bastard) hehe
HA!! damn them!
Have not seen it, but someone recommended it...hmmm can't remember.....thanks for refreshing my memory (and for scaring me), I will now seek out the DVD, this must be good.

Brittany, incredible choice of song and film! Jill and I absolutely adore this movie. The book is amazing, too. Warner, Ramsey, and Morton involved in one project, plus all the music that's mentioned in the book. Heavenly. I could ramble for hours about how much I love this film. I'll just say the final scene, in the night club, is my favorite of all time. I've read all of Warner's incredibly funny books, gone to see everything with Morton in it (even the stupid dog movie she did recently) ...but when will Lynne Ramsey make another film? I ask myself that every few months. Hurry up, woman!
Oh, I love that last scene! Knowing that you and Jill are big fans of this movie (and book) further validates that everyone should rent this! Hopefully Lynne Ramsey will put out another film soon--her Wiki page says she made the "#12 spot in Guardian Unlimited's list of the world's 40 best directors working today," so at least we know she's still working, on things like The Doves, I guess!
But she's not working today, that's the problem!
And hey, guess what one of my first ever blogs here was about?
Great minds, B, great minds...!

Cheers to that! great minds!
"Council estates" is probably one of my most favorite terms used in the UK. They sound so posh, although I've a got friend who just moved to the council estates in London and he tells me they are not! Sounds much better than calling them "the 'jects"
Your friend is correct! Council estates contain houses provided by the local council (or government) for people who are less well off. I work with an American guy who wandered into one of the estates with his family, while looking for a place to live. He flagged down a cop car, and asked what the neighbourhood was like. The cop said, "Get your family, get back into your car, and go. This place is not for you." A ringing endorsement!
