Under the Covers: Lionel Richie's "Hello" and Ben E. King's "Stand By Me"

Posted over 3 years ago

Upon waking up I realized I had a dream that I was at an Incubus concert. This was probably a recurring dream about 7 years ago when I probably was headed to see them, but I lost interest after "Morning View" and then Brandon Boyd grew a mustache so...yeah.

Anyway, here's live audio of Incubus covering "Stand By Me," and the one after that is their cover of Lionel Richie's "Hello."

Actually played "Stand By Me" with my old bandmates at my oldest son's wedding last weekend...that one didn't make it on the video or I'd share it. Always a fun song!

HA, I felt much for Brandon's little stache though. It's a good kind...

Hey thanks for the Cornelius tip! MOG never ceases to amaze me!

Alyx: you're welcome. was pretty cool to see him on mog. and "brandon's little stache" haha, well, when put like that it does sound rather endearing.

LOL!  I saw them do the Richie number live and Madonna-I think it was 'Papa Don't Preach'-hilarious!

I gotta insist you go back and listen to 'Warning' off of Morning View and 'Dig' off the last record before you write them off...They haven't made another 'Make Yourself' but Incubus is always good for a few AMAZING tracks per record.

Yeah, thansk for sharing these.  I never would have guessed Incubus doing the "Hello" song...I always thought that song was pretty cheesy, but this version is pretty cool!--In fairness, I remember the VIDEO as a kid, and that was cheesy, and I don't think all of Lionel Richie's stuff was bad.  I liked some of his solo, and quite a bit of Commodores.

Diggin' the Lionel cover since I was a huge fan back in the day(of Lionel). Haven't been much of an Incubus fan though. The 'Stand By Me' cover is just so so, although it sounds great, they didn't do anything very interesting with it(not that they did w/'hello' either but I just love that song). They obviously are excellent musicians though, which these songs show their virtuosity, which I can see despite my own taste.

This really makes me wonder if there's video out there of them doing "She's Your Queen to Be" from Coming to America. The fact that they'd break into that in concert bought those guys a lot of credit from me as they got gradually worse after "Morning View". That and the fact that "Aqueous Transmission" is a genuinely beautiful song.

The Lionel cover was an interesting curiosity, and "Stand By Me" was surprisingly reverent - although pretty conventional. Either way, Incubus is never regular fare for me.

Thanks for checking these out, everybody. I also have seen "Hello" performed live and it got everyone laughing/cheering along (in part I'm sure because of the pure cheesiness of the original Lionel video). When I was listening to these I remembered how much I was into their music and how much I like Brandon Boyd's voice (I liked hearing him sing "Stand By Me," such a covered cover, and no, it's nothing unusual they've done with it). I haven't heard anything post-"Morning View" that I particularly dug.

I would love to see their cover of the Coming to America song. One of my favorite movies hands-down. :)

Incubus is great; however, Boyd sounds like shit on both of these clips. Just my honest two cents :)

GarageRock: Lionel worked that rhyme good. haha.

coozdrm: you think? aw, i thought it was good, maybe a sign i hadn't listened to them in a while and found just the sound of boyd's voice (shitty or not) to be refreshing and with a hint of nostalgia for me.

Queen's Princess: thanks for checkin' in on this. glad you enjoyed it!

hahaha, i am in agreement! though, did the mustache effect the music, or was it merely an after affect?

:) serious 'staches have serious capabilities! effect or after-effect, if it wasn't for that thing, i bet incubus wouldn't be taking a break. his bandmates were probably pissed about it!

DJ Kilmore: I don't do mustaches, okaay? I have no tolerance for them, whatsoever. [hangs his head low, low, low]

I wonder what they'll sound and look like in '09. How would lampchop sideburns make them sound? hhaha - I'm out of hand this morning (too much espresso).

first off (and that is first of many) B, love the title "Under the Covers".  second, I hope you had a wonderful Brit-Day.  next (this is a two-parter) I have never listened to a single Incubus track in my life, but the covers were both (pardon my lameness) hella dope.  I don't know if you're supposed to judge people by their love for Lionel Richie, but I think we might have ourselves a new Incubus fan.  Lastly, "Stand By Me" is the SHIT!!!

    I'm out. LOVE

I'm not usually a fan of covers, but some people just put the right "je ne sais quoi" to make it funky enough for some S4 Love
