Adam Lambert AMA Performance: A Manly Affair

Posted about 2 years ago

Bondage, writhing dancers who want to get roughed up - Adam Lambert MUST be trading tips with Lady Gaga. And yes, I AM entertained! I love that this runner-up Idol is walking a man on a leash and getting head on stage. Brilliant.

Lambert, keep belting out your diva. You go, girl.

(I knew when I saw his album cover, things were only going to get better.)

Blasphemy! Kissing of the keyboardist? An oral sex simulation? Good God.

And so maybe it was a little too gay for most. (CBS was fined for the performance and ABC's Good Morning America said "you better don't" and nixed his morning concert.)

AND they edited it for west coast audiences and have been trying to take every clip of the performance off the internet...stupid. I actually couldn't find the kissing part. did i miss it or is this edited?

hahaha...brilliant strategy Lambert, the adorable idol uses his all-access pass for shock and awe! now all the ultra-conservatives here at work are like "did you see that???!!!"...sure, they won't buy his stuff - but this is spreadin' faster than H1N1 to those that will.

It's not like the Madonna's, Britney's and Gaga's of the world haven't done it before...and what about when Snoop showed up at the VMA's with women wearing dog collars and leashes? I don't see how this is any more or less shocking then what's already been done.

Thats it?! Thats what all the hype is about?! I feel ripped off. I was expecting some bang for my buck, some hardcore perverted sexual inuendo! This is ground that has already been covered like sound dessert says Madonna, Britney, Gaga, Marilyn manson. Ya know I bet thats it The networks are all about supporting gay rights as long as the sex isn't acted out by men. If it was a female preformer it woulda been ok. Chicks can kiss and be dominatrixes but If a dude does it then it's gone too far. Are we really that retarded that we don't see the blatent sexisim in this? If I was Gay i'd be pissed!

I haven't had a chance to watch the entire video (and youtube doesn't work @ work) but what I did one the news shows wasn't shocking in the least. As it has been said before: been there, seen that.

Why the big deal? Because they want it to be a big deal. Did anyone else notice that the video that all the shows use of "Adam Lambert slamming critics" were all taken from him backstage right after the performance? Besides, I doubt the show's producers' didn't see the entire performance numerous times during practice. The bottom line is that controversy is good publicity for the show (what will they do this year?!?!) and for the artist. Win, win.

Conspiracy theories aside, it looked like Adam was a little too into the dominatrix role. I was a little worried about the keyboard player after that kiss. Was it just me, or did that look painful. I mean, where's the love?

The real star in that performance was the set. Whoever designed that did a brilliant job & stole the show. Controversy? What controversy? Good for him for kissing another bloke on national TV & leading another by leash.

I actually thought it was a rather lackluster performance. Lambert's vocals were a tad off key & passionless imo. The whole performance seemed rather mechanical(obviously, if I'm enraptured w/the set).

If Lambert wanted to limit his audience and appeal and probably his overall success and marketability, he couldn't have done a better job at it.

With the talent he exhibited on idol, he could have had the public flocking to him and eating out of his hands. But now, I have a feeling a wide swath of the masses are going to be running the opposite direction.

Most people just starting out in the music world would seek to appeal to the broadest audience imaginable for the greatest degree of sales. I think that's usually the conventional wisdom, isn't it? I guess he had other plans.

The quality of his singing during the "performance" and the screaming for no other reason than he is able to, was not entertaining to me.

I think he's going to be one of those artists that is better heard than seen, if you can even stand to hear him.

I don't understand the wisdom of his choices.

A very thoughtful, well-mannered presentation.  I think Miss Janet Jackson could learn a thing or two from him.

I find him hugely entertaining and amazingly talented.  His CD's already on my Walkman :-)

It's gonna sound weird, but what struck me the most about this performance is how much his voice irritated my ears.

Thanks for posting this; it makes me want to hear his album. August, I am with you, I couldn't keep my attention off the costume design! And his Bill Kaulitz hair. MusicRX, I think you have an interesting point - to date, the Idol winners have tried to appeal to the broadest audience possible. As others have said, artists like Madonna, Janet Jackson and Marilyn Manson have already used these tricks. But I wonder if Idol winners might try a new strategy by appealing to niche audiences? I am thinking this could appeal to fans of Scissor Sisters and Patrick Wolf. Of which I am one!

I haven't actually seen this performance yet - I really should!  After hearing not-so-great things about the album I wasn't really interested in watching it.

Perhaps the second album will be properly amazing.

Lambert knew exactly what he was doing when he performed at the AMAs. He got the free press that he needed to promote his album and strategically released his second single, 'Whatya Want From Me', which is far better than his first, 'For Your Entertainment'. The message is obvious in 'Whatya Want From Me' and it's exactly what Lambert is going through following the backlash he's experiencing from his performance.

The thing I'm most disappointed about is that, with all of the controversy, no one's talking about how Lambert tripped and fell during his performance! Hilarious.

iMusicDaily, definitely caught the trip. What bothers me is that no one is even discussing the performance from a music standpoint, or lack thereof. Someone like Lambert who is being hyped as an amazing vocalist barely sang. Rather, the "shock" value of his performance became the focal point because there was nothing else to talk about. And, I don't know if all the hoopla is really over the gay kiss, I mean really, ABC shows have gay kisses all the time as of late - more so it was the simulated oral sex and thrusting of faces into crotches. What pop stars today lack is subtly and originality. As so many have pointed out, this has all been done before, he differentiated himself by taking it too far and not living up to the hype.
