Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur

Posted about 1 year ago
Featuring songs of peace activist John Lennon performed by artists such as U2, REM, Christina Aguilera, Los Lonely Boys, Jackson Browne, Green Day, Avril Lavigne, Ben Harper and you guessed it...Jack Johnson. The country of Darfur, combined with neighboring Chad, is in need of extreme assistance during recent struggles 400,000 people have died, and over 2.5 million people have been displaced from their homes. Sometimes it takes somber events and news to bring people together. It is unfortunate when that happens, but it is better late than never. As we saw with Live Earth and Live8, people will join in mass numbers to contribute to good causes; all they need is music. The album, Instant Karma: The Campaign to Save Darfur, released on June 12, 2007. There are two discs and 23 tracks of music put together by amazingly talents singers and musicians to help raise money for people in need.Yoko Ono donated the rights to John Lennon's entire catalog for this release. "John Lennon was not just a famous Beatle, he was the social conscience of his generation," says Jeff Ayeroff, one of the album's executive producers. You will hear Aerosmith singing reggae with Sierra Leone Refuge All-Stars, Jack Johnson and Avril Lavigne with their own renditions of his song "Imagine."Don't let the fact that Christina Aguilera is covering Lennon's song "Mother" deter you from buying this album. She does the song justice and you can tell that every other artist took great pains to make sure they did as well. You won't hear people trying to sound just like John Lennon; each artist put their own signature on the songs; but this is a good thing if you ask me. So whether you are an avid John Lennon follower, or just a huge music lover, you are going to absolutely fall in love with this album.

  1. vinniek says Very cool, BMU! Listening to Steven Tyler doing some scat rapping (how else to describe it?) is very cool! I want to hear more. Guess I'll have to buy the cd. Great post! I definitely want to hear Jac and Avril doing Imagine! V

  2. The Serenity Vortex says I've never got into the John Lennon thing, but that's probably because I dislike the Beatles a lot (their music is what I hate, other aspects are quite cool). But any album that tries to raise money for people in need gets my vote, so I'm going to click the like it button and hope people notice this post.

  3. bringmeup says I agree, and it upsets me when people take the tone of "well these singers could give more and do more." They are doing this, and it will help, don't knock it and don't put a negative spin on something that is meant to be a good thing. Ya know? So I'm glad you both think it's cool. Enjoy! =o)

  7. HelenMarie says Hey! I'm so glad you posted this. I quickly downloaded Instant Karma off itunes. I had a giftcard and it was only like $11, win-win situation. The 23 tracks make it well worth it. I'm not too picky when I know something is put together for a good cause but I truly enjoy hearing these songs. I'm a bit of a Lennon fan too so that may help-he was a great soul. Way to support The Boy Flood too!

  9. HelenMarie says I should've been a little more clear, I quickly downloaded "when I first heard bout it" the weekend before last or something...but didn't get a post going since I'm not much of a writer so I was sure someone else would do it better justice (which was done). But I'm glad someone posted about it.
