Somebody Squeeze Me....

If you like Squeeze, then you may find your foot tapping uncontrollably to a couple of the songs on Gotye's latest album, Making Mirrors. The song "I Feel Better" is like a happy pill. It reminds me so much of Squeeze that I had to look at the ipod to make sure I didn't have it on shuffle.
This next song is familiar in that way. It's another elixir for what ails ya. "In Your Light".
This song veers off that course a bit and shows off their sense of humor. "State of the Art" is a tongue in cheek commentary on our fascination with all things new and improved. ("Oh my God it's so...Hold the Phone it's so...state of the art." And, it comes complete with this interesting video. Act now and we'll throw in this shiny polishing cloth that holds 7 times it's weight in dust.

You may enjoy this....I have...
Oh, look! Another MOG post on Gotye ;-)
Well, just because Dash has this relentless "scorched earth" policy here at MOG - it shouldn't preclude others from posting about a band or artist ;-)
So - yeah - this Goatye is really making a big splash these days.
Nice to hear that "Squeeze rock" is back in vogue!

(Cromweasel's brand spanking new one!)
Deb! That was cool! Thanks for sharing. I was interested in the part about the Lowery Cotillion, which is featured prominently in that State of the Art video. So, I post here to share, but I often end up learning as opposed to educating, which is cool. For instance, I didn't know that Gotye was a "he", rather than a "they." And now I've had a peek intot he creative process behind the music.
Dave, I didn't realize the horse was already dead! But if something is good, it bears repeating, eh?
No "dead horses" here, bri
Just dead flowers! ;-)
Hey - may I interest you in a Cromwell Original?

His voice DOES resemble Paul Carrack's but I also hear a strong resemblance to Steve Winwood. I see what you mean about the Squeeze comparison, but I guess Squeeze had so many songs that sounded very different from each other.....I guess I was expecting Tilbrook or Difford's voices, which I associate more when I think of Squeeze, but I'm overanalyzing this and that's ridiculous...I like these songs! Sould driven!
Thanks, Brian
Those 1st 2 songs are part of the reason I got turned off to them. WAY too poppy & slick for my taste. I much prefer their quirkier songs like that 3rd one! I'm not much of a Squeeze fan either.
They do make some amazing videos though & are talented songwriters!
Well I'll be danged
my foot, it taps
I gotta be careful when i do that, Rumsey.......especially on hardwood floors...frickin' toe bones...bouncin'...rollin' under the table....gotta fight the damn dog for 'em....or dig 'em up later..
......and don't get me goin' bout snappin my fingers
Hi Andrea. Inspired by this post, I had to listen to a bunch of Squeeze last night. That was fun. Musically, something about the song structures and his voice just made me think of Squeeze. And here is yet another instance where I'm learning something from you folks. I had NO idea that both Jools Holland and Paul Carrack were ever in Squeeze!
August: I LOVE the poppiness of those songs! Sometimes I can only take so much edgy and unpolished music and then I need to hear something that just flows...
Rummy and Deadman: I find my foot tapping as well. And fingers snapping. Careful Deadsy, you'll be nothing but a bag of bones if you keep enjoying music that way!
I forgot what a cool video this was back in the day:
That is a cool vid & song too.
There's just something missing in those Gotye songs. No soul to them imo. . . .
Great song and vid, yes! Brian, listen to Tempted, one of their biggest ones...Paul Carrack does the lead along with Tilbrook...I do see what you're saying about the song structure...and sometimes bands/artists just remind us of other bands or artists....we all have our own personal ways we hear and absorb stuff, and again what a beautiful thing about music! :-)
Andrea, I LOVE Tempted! I've liked the song for years, but when they put it into a scene in Reality Bites (a movie I loved in the 90's) it became even more special to me. Great song!
August: you're entitled to your very wrong opinion. Haha! I kid, of course.
i was psyched to see this guy when we were on the same bill at the Homebake Festival in Sydney in December. mixing festivals can really suck and i usually defend my brothers, but this ended up a bit of a mess and definitely not like Squeeze. still a fan though.
Inquiring minds want.....well, it may be something you want to keep quiet, but do you have any
juicydetails about the experience with Gotye, Robin?(not trying to bogart your post, Brian, sorry!)
No prob Andrea. Bogart away...my inquiring mind is always working.
Robin, is it harder to mix because of the acoustical environment of the outdoors? I think back to that video you posted of David Byrne speaking about the challenges of going from CBGB to large arena's and the science of sound.
HA! If I'm wrong, I don't wanna be right. I have goooooood taste so whatev John/Brian/Jingleheimergmschmidt(at least I don't have a personality crisis hehe). It's all about personal taste as Andrea pointed out. . . .
Btw, here's a group I just discovered on Noisetrade that I think you'd really enjoy. Definitely some Squeeze/power pop influence going on w/their sound. And it's a FREE album too.
Ding ding ding! You had me at Free! I'll head over and have a listen. Thanks. Btw, I never wanted an FB page, in fact I was very anti-FB but when everyone left here I figured I'd just use an alias. It's fun! I've got no interest in telling everyone when I'm cleaning my gutters or picking up pizza or...you get the picture. Certainly is a conversation piece since my name is their name too...
Hmm... I think I'm gonna leave that one on the table. not really my speed. I don't really like his voice, and the music is a little cute for me...
I'm surprised I actually like it so far. Haven't dled yet though since I'm only 1/2 way through. We'll see. They kinda remind me of Jellyfish from the early '90s who I loved
And I thank you for not posting the particulars about your life on FB, haha. Interesting you never wanted to be on FB.
See, now, I love Jellyfish. Funny how often they've come up in conversation lately. Musically, they were way better than that band on Noisetrade, but I get the quality of his voice is similar.
I agree, they are a better band. I just thought I'd put it out there for you to check out since you're such a power pophead & the music sounded like something you'd dig. I totally understand though about voices since there are a few that I don't care for either like Lou Reed & Leonard Cohen. But I do know they are talented songwriters since I do enjoy covers of their songs. I think that band on noisetrade are great songwriters too since the songs are catchy but the lead singer just doesn't do it for you which is cool I get that.
This post is a treasure trove. Gotye got me---beautiful voice and melodies. His creative process in DEB's video grabbed me; we have boxes of our kids' early artwork. I listened to my Squeeze LP East Side Story for the first time in thirty years---seven good tracks! Their "Hourglass" video is cinematographically imaginative. And Jellyfish seems to be a viable band as well.
Hi Spike, you may enjoy this song too. It's an older Gotye song that I had forgotten about completely and put onto one of my Mog playlists:

Fun video, and this also brings me back to Squeeze...
Hard not to like.
for you guys that are asking, if the band projects (as opposed acoustic folk style stuff with microphones picking up quiet guitars and whispered vocals), outdoor shows are usually easier to mix although many artists like to feel the room coming back at them. if you have plenty of speaker coverage it's easier to get good definitition without things bouncing off the walls of venues that were not made for amplified sound.
the thing that sucks about festivals is that you're often running in to do a fast flip from the previous band with no soundcheck so it can be a mess to not only make sure all the lines are connected but that the artists have some sort of monitors and you can jimmy rig a mix to the audience. Gotye's peeps did not have it together in Sydney. I was mixing on a digital console that i had never touched before in the same situation but even though it was a nail-biter we did better.
Robin, that's gotta be frustrating if your vision as an artist doesn't translate at an event due to technicalities. Knowing nothing about mixing, I was surprised to see that outdoor shows are (generally) easier to mix...
I'm usually not a fan of recorded live music...rock music anyway. If you're there at the event, it's all encompassing. You feel the music in your body, you connect the dots by watching the performers create the sound. Removing yourself from that experience reduces the experience to the limits of your stereo. Unfortunately, I've never had nice equipment. (A travesty for a music fan, I know). To spin a record of that event doesn't often translate for me. There aren't many exceptions I can think of.
Who did you work with during your Australia trip? Did you see any dingos eating babies?
Indoor ones can be bungled as well. Must to avoid: when the extreme volume tranforms music into sheer molecular anarchy. However, whenever it's anything less, the audience starts talking to each other. Really renews your faith in humanity.
"molecular anarchy" haha. I have problems with all the cords behind, around and under my desk. Tower, speakers, printer, system saver, dls...I can't imagine chasing cords around a stadium...well, I can...and it makes my cringe! Some people are compelled to hear their own voice at all times.
Deb, Are the voices in my head bothering you?
Spike, I went to see the Pixies and the opening act Surfer Blood last year in an old Armory gymnasium. I was afraid the sound would not be good. Surprise! It was excellent! It's terrible to go to shows that you shuck out big bucks for only to be disappointed by the noise...
No Brian, they're not bothering me at all, they seem to get along quite well with the voices in my head.
