Welcome Back

Posted almost 4 years ago
Hey there, Mogosphere! I've been away for a while because I've returned to real work, and I've barely even had time to walk the dog, let along Mogify.I've returned to teaching. Not at the high school level, but working with 18-24 year old urban high school grads learning to work in investments and high tech. I'm teaching them how to write better, or as I like to say, more good. I did this for a number of reasons. To wit:1.)My world had gotten really small. I was tired of not really seeing anybody, of not feeling like it really mattered on a day to day basis whether I worked or not, and of not having the opportunity to exchange ideas with anyone face-to-face.2.)Writing wasn't paying the bills, and I was spending way too much energy fretting about the financial mess I was in and all of the things that weren't happening with my books rather than appreciating everything that is happening. The business part was starting to suck the fun out of what is a really fun job. Now I can put envy aside for a while (though, come on, it's never far away) and focus on gratitude. Like for the fact that my pseudonymous horror novel has the greatest, most kickass cover of all time. Check it out "here":http://www.amazon.com/Mall-Cthulhu-Seamus-Cooper/dp/15978012753.)I missed it really badly. I've found that, professionally speaking, I'm good at 2 things: writing and teaching. I spent the last 4 and a half years writing exclusively, and there was a whole part of me that was feeling really undernourished.I'm very happy because I'm working in a great place with great people and students who want to be there and have made pretty inspirational choices to change their lives. And now that writing is my second job, I'm thinking it's going to get more fun again. I'm still working out how to get everything done in a day, but that will fall into place.I still need music in my life, and I still like boring people with my opinions, so I'll still be around.

  3. vannatta says So true earthman - and you'll find the balance - just keep modifying as you need to. By the way, that is the most kick ass cover of all time - let alone any genre. Have to ask though, why a pseudonym?

  4. Jonh Ingham says Wow that book cover is fantastic. And what a title - would that Mall be in the town of Lovecraft, perchance? I like your nom de terror as well - I hear he's an Irishman of some repute.

  6. HelenMarie says Nice to see your words on appreciating and focusing on the positive. Everyone has waves of this I think, just how you manage it. The teaching job sounds v. inspiring too. Cheers for that. The cover of the horror novel is creepy, funny, cool. Is that guy holding a coffee pot...? Ha! I know coffee has many benefits, could it also be the key defense from giant killer squid…hum. And last but not least...I finally got focused myself and finished through the Long Way Back. For the record I just started it last weekend and read it within the week...the greatest number of pages per day average since my summers off in grade school! I had quite a list of books to work through honestly. I should've bumped it ahead of others. All the good things I heard were all true. And the music...the ultimate rescuer, everyone here should read it. You’re obviously talented at expressing what everyone else has a hard time with. "More good" with everything. : )

  7. darmuzz says Yeah, I could never be a full-time writer. Too isolating and needs too much discipline. Can't wait to read "Mall of Cthulhu" though!

  11. brendanhalpin says Hey everybody--thanks for the support! The pseudonym: well, the Brendan Halpin brand, such as it is, doesn't really include comic horror novels. So publishing it under another name keeps both my adult publisher and my young adult publisher happy and protects my image as a purveyor of bittersweet, music-infused realistic fiction. Well, sort of realistic anyway. Cooper is my dog's name. Seamus is his best doggy friend. Hence Seamus Cooper. Ted is holding a coffee pot--he does use coffee as a weapon at one point. By the way, the artist's name is Scott Altmann.
