Long Way FAQ!

Posted about 1 year ago
A lot of people say to me, "Brendan! Long Way Back came out so long ago! When's the paperback coming?" Actually, nobody's said that to me, but if they did, I'd tell them that on Tuesday, January 29th, the long wait for the US paperback of Long Way Back will end at last. Below, some frequently asked questions:Q: Who's the hottie on the cover?A: I have no idea. I believe she's there to make the book look more female-friendly. Apparently the guitar on the hardback cover was alarmingly phallic or something.Q: Where can I get my copy or copies?A: Pretty much anywhere, as far as I know. Please see below for some advice on strategic purchasing.Q: Is it possible to read the end of this book without being moved to tears?A: I don't think so. Finish the book in private if this is a concern to you.Q: I've heard the main characters are Catholic. Is this like a religious book about God and stuff?A: Not really. It certainly concerns, in part, what happens to one person's faith after a tragedy, but that's not the main focus of the book. The focus of the book is the miraculous healing power of punk rock. It's good for the religious and the God-phobic alike. I'm far too uncertain about everything to proselytize.Q:I understand that music is very important in this book. What if I don't know anything about punk rock?A: If you're on MOG, it should be easy enough to get hip to the important songs in the book. If I can figure out how, I'll make a playlist. Having said that, though, I've been told by people who don't know a thing about punk rock that they found this book really accessible and moving.Q: Is it true that the end of Long Way Back is the best thing you've ever written?A: Yes.Q: I love your work and really want to support you.(Or--I am a friend or family member and feel an obligation to support you.) I know your publisher won't be doing squat to promote this book. What can I do?A: Great question. You are essentially my publicists for this book. (you can be happy in the knowledge that as unpaid volunteers, your hourly rate is only slightly worse than what a real publicist working for a New York publisher makes!) Here are some suggestions.1.Strategic purchasing. If you are planning to buy your copy or multiple copies for friends and family from Amazon.com, please consider placing your order on the first day it's available, January 29th. While Amazon hasn't revealed their exact formula for calculating sales ranking, it seems clear that multiple purchases on the same day move you up more than if they're spread over several days. Everybody complains that the Amazon numbers aren't accurate, and everybody checks them. 2.Ask for it by name! This works especially well in independent bookstores, where the purchasing is done by someone on site. The employees notice what people want and try to stock it. (It helps if you ask at B&N and Borders too, especially if you don't see it.)3.Bring it to your book group! Long Way Back is that rare book that is a fast, compelling read that also gives you stuff to talk about. Everyone in the group will probably read it, so you can actually have a good conversation about a book before you start focusing on the wine.4. Mention it in person. People buy books on word of mouth. Tell people you liked it, even press your copy into their hands. While I love sales, every time somebody reads this book it's good for me.5.Mention it on the internets. Many of you have already done this, and I appreciate it. Anything you can do is helpful--mog, blog, reviews on amazon, shelfari, library thing, goodreads, or mentions on your myspace or facebook, or whatever other kind of networking site or blog you have--it's all good, and it all helps. Indeed, I think this might be the key to helping this book find a larger audience.Q: Will this book get the recognition it deserves?A: Let's hope so. I'm convinced this book could appeal to way more people than have already read it. I deeply appreciate anything you can do to help.

  2. contrabandwidth says The copy you sent me has no hottie! I was gypped! :) Still plugging away and enjoying it (at the pace expected by one who's life is consumed by little ones).

  5. Bartleby says Paperbacks tend to focus more on the packaging but don't take anything off. So your offer is definitely tempting. (Q: Do you mind if you put your book up on for some book crossing?)

  6. brendanhalpin says Yeah, my only fear is that people picking up this book in hopes of reading about the libidinous adventures of the sylph on the cover will be disappointed. Hmm. Maybe that's the book I should write next...

  7. dachmo says I had to look up Sylph. ...and yes that could be a money maker right there

  8. funoka says If I saw this gal I would be glad to see her "back." Good luck on the paperback version of the book, I will keep an eye out for it just order it on Amazon. If you need any help with "research" on the next one . . .

  9. dachmo says despite the pretty, feminine look to the paperback version I will say that it is a much better cover than the original.

  10. Sturgell says Something is telling me that this book is probably a great read. Perhaps it's the *countless great posts* the author writes on this site! You're all fools if you don't order a copy. FOOLS I tell you!

  11. I am says Bren, I got this idea in my head. I 'll go to the counter at my local big book store and whisper, "Do you have Long Way Back by Brendan Halpin?" When thew counter person says "Excuse me?" I will shout, "Do you have Long Way Back by Brendan Halpin, he is only the greatest author of the last 20 years." I think that'll get someone's attention. Congrats.

  12. brendanhalpin says Chris-- I like that "whisper to a scream" technique. Funoka--if you manage to track down the coversylph and engage in some libidinous adventures, I definitely want to hear about it. Dachmo-- I do like the new cover quite a lot--I just worry a little bit about the fact that it has nothing to do with what's inside. Bartleby--By all means book cross it--that's pretty much the same as pressing it into someone's hand. Sturgell--I think that "something" telling you this is a great read is actually my relentless self-promotion, but I appreciate the kind words about my posts. And you are correct that anyone who doesn't buy my books is a fool. A fool, I say! Thanks, everybody!

  13. Augusts1 says I'll vouch for the fact that the new cover has little to do w/the actual content. I read the book a few months ago and HIGHLY recommend it. It is a page turner & I read it in record time for me(since I'm typically a slow reader). A really entertaining read that is balanced out w/some pretty heavy stuff as well as plenty of humor.

  15. Michael Goldberg says It's a great book. Once you start it you won't be able to put it down. Anyone at MOG should dig this book. Music is the salvation of the main character.

  16. Jonh Ingham says When you do a book review of your own book, will the music tag be Talking Heads 'The Book I Read'?

  17. holyfool says I can vouch for the fact that this is, in fact, a great read. and it goes quickly as well, I finished it in a day. And yes, no worries if you know nothing of punk rock, it won't get in the way of the story. It's more about finding salvation through music, in this case punk, and I think that's something everyone on this site can relate to. Highly recommended!

  18. mister gary at work again says Quality new cover on the paperback, heh. Finally got around to starting the book the other night, and I had to FORCE myself to put it down and get to bed because the wife and I are a bit on the exhausted side these days. Still, I'm gripped from the opening - can't wait to sit down for more later today!
