WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Adventures in Radio

Posted over 2 years ago
I am suffering in a number of ways since my Sirius receiver got stolen and I am stuck listening to terrestrial radio. (And, I mean, they can't even use the Sirius receiver! It's just a useless thing with buttons on it to them! Cripes!)Anyway, I heard Rick Derringer's "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo" the other day on the radio, and I just really hate that song. And then about two thirds of the way through the song, Rick asks, "Somebody say keep on rockin'?" Now, I don't know about you, but I am pretty sure that I have never told Rick Derringer to keep on rockin'. It occurs to me that we all might have been spared a lot of heartache over the years if, on that fateful day, nobody had told Rick Derringer to keep on rockin'.I also heard Trio's "Da Da Da" the other day. It brought back all kinds of memories, as I am the only person in the United States of America to ever own not one but two Trio albums. (one's an import and has a great cover of that "sittin' in the la la waitin' for my ya ya") song. Anyway, I'd love to revisit Trio, but I am currently without any means to play my vinyl. But it occurs to me that Trio, a German, uh, Trio with guitar, drums, and casiotone keyboard, might be more influential than your average German one-hit wonder from the '80's, which is to say Nena, Taco, or Falco. (Not actually sure if Taco was German or not, and maybe Falco was Austrian, but anyway...) There was just something in "Da Da Da": the simple melody? The low, deadpan vocals? The female voice on the chorus? that reminded me of Magnetic Fields. Also the spare instrumentation and production surely influenced the White Stripes. Unless it didn't. But something like, for example, "Ich Lieb Den Rock and Roll" could be a White Stripes song. Except, you know, in German. My favorite Trio song is an almost instrumental casiotone showcase in which the chorus consists of off-key singing, with occasional coughing, the phrase "Drei Mann Im Doppelbett". That's "Three Men in a Double Bed." Whatever. Not really any point to all this, and no music, just my annoying rambling.

  1. Cody B says Annoying rambling makes me delete. Funny rambling makes me laugh. Only a music obsessive can talk the way you just did...If Berlin is red hot right now, then I'm sure Trio had a lot to do with it..Good Shit. people keep makin' records and people like us keep listenin' and liking. It makes perfect sense to me..but I'm crazy.

  2. Dzendvokh says Funny rambling indeed Too bad about the music part, the reference to "an almost instrumental casiotone showcase in which the chorus consists of off-key singing, with occasional coughing" had me salivating for more.

  3. brendanhalpin says Ah, the glory of the internet. I found a podcast with "Drei Mann Im Doppelbett"--it's at http://www.wfmu.org/playlists/shows/25098. It's every bit as good as I remember. And there's really only one cough. But still.

  5. darmuzz says I listened to "Da Da Da" recently too. Once upon a time I was given the LP to review for my college newspaper and I was sacked for writing it off without putting it into context (their influences, etc.) Am still fond of the song, though. And, of course, that Italian trio Eiffel 65 and their song "Blue (Da Ba Dee)."

  7. derringer says I am Rick Derringer and, for your information, many people have said to me "Keep On Rocking", and whether you like it or not, that's just what I intend to do. "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" has stood the test of time, where most songs just simply don't. Recently I was featured in the nationally broadcast, Fidelity Trading TV spot, and I was singing "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo". It's also received many awards, among which is the prestigious BMI "million airplay award" recognizing the fact that it has been played on radio more than 1,000,000 times! You may not like it, but fortunately for me, many, many people do! Rick Derringer

  8. derringer says I almost forgot, it's currently featured prominently on X-Box 360. And one more thing. How many monster hit records have you ever written?

  9. brendanhalpin says If you are, in fact, Rick Derringer (and I mean, really, who else would know all that stuff about "Rock and Roll, Hoochie Koo"), I'm a little surprised that you're taking the time to sign up for Mog just to post a snippy reply to what is, I think, a pretty light-hearted joke at your expense. Too much autogoogling. I've written zero monster hit records. I have played on zero Weird Al records. I have never toured with Cyndi Lauper. No song I've ever written has ever become the official rock song of the state of Ohio. (For the record, I like "Hang on Sloopy",Weird Al, and Cyndi Lauper.) And yet, must one achieve what an artist has achieved in order to have an opinion about their work? That's a pretty high bar, dude. I guess you don't get to have an opinion about the new R.E.M. album. Or anything by U2. Or, for that matter, Miley Cyrus. I do make my living off my art, and you can check the Amazon reviews of my first book if you want to see a whole lot of people sounding off on what an asshole I am. Chime in if you want! I got early on that part of the trade off of having a dream job is that you have to develop kind of a thick skin about what people say about your work. Kinda sad that after forty years of making music, you can't shrug off one nasty joke by a relative nobody. But if it will make you feel better, then by all means keep on rockin'. There, I said it at last.

  10. dachmo says Being that I had a little time to kill this afternoon, as soon as I sat down here I read your post entitled "If You Can't Say Anything Nice..." which brought me back to this happy event between you and "Mr. Derringer", I decided to do a little googling myself (not of myself). If you type in just "Rick Derringer" nothing connecting you to him pops up, at least nothing in the first 150 results that is, what happens after that becomes obsessive. If you type in "Rick Derringer, Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" you have to go all the way to result 146 to find your MOG post. My conclusion is that either Rick Derringer has a "paranoia" program running on his computer that alerts him to every new occurrence of his name and/or song title(s) or someone here on MOG is screwing with you. I for one would be real happy to know that I wrote something that pissed off the guy who sings RnR Hoochie Koo (I honestly wasn't aware of his name until your post) I would also be just as happy to know that I wrote something that pissed off someone who is an obsessive fan of said artist/song. Either way Trio is a much more interesting band to talk about. On a side note your mention of Trio got me thinking about a band named "Freur" who had a song around the same time called "Doot Doot". Great song if you don't know it, but what got my attention even more is that the two members of "Freur" became the leading force behind the British Drum and Bass band "Underworld". Which is information I wouldn't have know if I hadn't been entertained by your dislike of the Hoochie Koo song ( I don't want to thank the person who stole your Serius radio because if that hadn't happened then none of this would have happened and I'd be a little less wiser and you never would have been yelled at by "Mr. Derringer" ) Now, this comment is a true pointless ramble.
