WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

What Comes of Taking Good Care of Your Voice

Posted over 2 years ago
So I was thinking about rock and roll singers not taking care of their voices, and this led me to remember Van Lear Rose by Loretta Lynn, which she recorded when she was SEVENTY. Her voice still sounds amazing. So it can be done. This particular track once knocked me off a piece of exercise equipment. Back in late 2003, I loaded it onto my MP3 player without having listened to it, and there I was in the gym when this amazing song came on. I totally wasn't ready for it, because there's just not that much popular music about being widowed. The part where she sings "I took off my wedding band/and put it on my right hand" still gets me every time. Anyway, so there I was on the cardio machine, and this song came on, and I had to get off and go into the locker room where the sight of old men shaving while standing naked in front of the sink and resting their man parts on the porcelain at least replaced sadness with horror for a few minutes. I'd like to write a country song about this incident and call it "Tears on the Treadmill". Even though it was an elliptical machine.

  2. brendanhalpin says I love the idea of the dog! If I could only work whiskey, Jesus, and a woman who done me wrong in there, it would be just about perfect.

  3. Cody B says Well, it all sounds good now, but I'm sure it's been done already. Hasn't every country song been written yet?

  4. vannatta says Rock and Roll singers, bordering on what I call the "Cookie Monster" vocal, have no chance in Hell of singing like Loretta at this, or any other age. You're right, there is a lot that you can do - sing in your "normal" voice when singing, stay away from caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol - don't yell, and well, you can't even talk that much (especially while touring), always warm up before singing, etc... etc... Cody B: LOL!!! I think its safe to say as long as we enter new wars, and voting in Republican Presidents, there will be no shortage of Country Love Songs...
