WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

If You Have Ghosts

Posted over 2 years ago
So I was going to call my whole Halloween project to a halt because Sunday October 21 was the fourth anniversary of my late wife Kirsten's death from breast cancer. (I never say "passing" because a)it implies an afterlife she didn't believe in and b) it just reminds me of farting, which doesn't seem appropriately serious for what actually happened.) So, Kirsten's deathday having passed, I was feeling a little better and more able to focus on how incredibly lucky I am now to have this big blended family, and I kind of wanted to give the monsters a rest. And then there was an outbreak of grief here on MOG. I didn't know Chris at all-(social networking is a bit dicey for those of us who are by nature antisocial)but I've been moved by all of the sadness floating around here, and I wanted to offer up a Halloweeny track that I find strangely uplifting.Roky Erickson's lyrics are usually pretty easy to decipher: there's not a lot of ambiguity in "Night of the Vampire" or "Creature With the Atom Brain" or "Burn the Flames." But sometimes, as in "Two Headed Dog," or "White Faces," or here, he gets downright gnomic. So what the hell is "If You Have Ghosts" about? I have no freaking idea, but here's what I get out of it, which I admit may be light years from what Roky intended."If you have ghosts, then you have everything."I take this to mean if you are haunted by the memories of people you've lost, it's because you made a real connection with them. And if you've lost them, you understand how precious every connection that you still have is. And, ultimately, there's nothing else important in the world. So, if you have ghosts, then you have everything. Here's to your ghosts, and mine.

  1. contrabandwidth says Well said. Mr. Erikson, although hard to tap to his exact meaning, is one of the most convincing singers/songwriters ever. Love the song.

  2. HelenMarie says Your *b)* interpretation of the word passing was pretty darn funny and brought a big smile to my face. Our time with people we connect with and love is such a precious thing and the moments we loose those people, makes us realize it is everything. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and that song.

  3. scotfree says I think you got it right, Brendan. I've never really listened to Roky, but this puts him on my list, a nice rockin' time with obscure subject - love it!

  4. goodmusiconly says Brendan, you have a gift with words, and the musical connection you've made with your own tragedy and what has happened here is perfect. Sending hugs and thanks your way.

  8. darmuzz says Four years is not that long, Brendan. Or maybe it feels like another lifetime. I just finished reading your book, "It Takes a Worried Man," yesterday. So here's to ghosts, and to giving monsters a rest too.

  10. Lizziegreeneyes says I see similar traits - humor to hide pain... but I see at the heart of all of this - love and resistance to understanding, ultimately acceptance. I just think it takes us all different spaces of time to do so... Sorry for your troubles Brendan.

  11. Lyrikhan says Even if that was not his lyrical intention, that's an interesting interpretation of his lyrics. Personally, I'd have to say you are spot on. Just saw a trailer recently for the Roky Erickson documentary "You're Gonna Miss Me" that dubbed him as quite the lyricist. I had heard mention of him several times before and his work with the 13th Floor Elevators but have yet to explore his music like I should. I think after hearing this track I'm a bit more motivated to do so.

  13. brendanhalpin says Thanks to everybody for your kind and thoughtful comments. I'm still not sure how to fit his line about not wanting his fangs too long into my reading, but I'm confident it can be done.

  14. Iren says I think the not wanting the Fang's Too Long might be a reference to not wanting to hurt those he comes in to contact with.... and if anyone hasn't seen it "Your Gonna Miss Me" is a solid documentary that is well worth checking out...
