Free Books For Moggers!

Posted over 2 years ago
So here's the deal. A few years back I wrote a novel entitled Long Way Back. It's the story of a guy who has a profound religious experience as a child and a profound tragedy as an adult, and how punk rock helps bring him back to life again. The ending of this book is the best thing I've ever written, and I'm really proud of the whole thing. It's a quick, easy read, and, I think, fun and uplifting. It's really a love letter to music--the music that saw me through not only the hormonal horror of adolescence, but also the existential horror of watching my late wife sicken and die from breast cancer. (This is the october tragedy I've coyly alluded to in my halloween music posts.) Like most writers, I'm convinced more people would like my work if they only knew about it. And this book in particular would really appeal to a great many members of the MOG community. It's not just about how music makes you feel better--it's about how music can change and even save your life. So anyway, this book will finally be coming out in paperback in the US in January, and my ulterior motive here is that I'm obviously hoping people will like and recommend it and that it will finally find the audience I think it deserves. Also, though, I'd really love for some people who would get the book on a deep level to read and enjoy it, and this is clearly a place full of people who love music as deeply and irrationally as I and my characters do. So send me a MOGmail with your name and address, and I'll mail you a free copy of my novel Long Way Back. (I've got editions from both US and UK publishers lying around, so I'll send you whatever I reach for first.) I'll even sign it for you. Bargain!(offer limited to the first 25 or so people who respond, or however many copies of this book I have in my house.)I'm including the Buzzcocks' "What Do I Get?" here because it figures prominently in the book and because I originally wanted to title the book "What Do I Get", but my publisher told me people wouldn't get it. (also, you know, what do you get? A free book!) Other bands that figure prominently are the Ramones and the Who.

  1. Iren says That's a very cool offer... and I hope you won't be offended that I don't take you up on it... as I have a copy of that very book on my bedside table...I am only a couple of pages in (of course I am reading 2 other books at the same time), but so far so good....

  3. Lizziegreeneyes says *Iren:* I have that same problem - think I have 4 that are partially read... ah well, this one would take the top spot !!! *brendan:* good on you for writing something so personal & universal all in one breath ! Just the kind of book that stays with me long after it's last page :)

  4. goodmusiconly says I've been absent from mog and haven't yet had the chance to backtrack, but I'll try to update myself on your halloween posts. I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, Brendan. You're combining two things that are important to my life - books and punk rock, and yes, I'm very interested in reading yours, if you still have copies left. I'll drop you a mogmail! :)

  5. brendanhalpin says Thank you! Since life threw some horrible surprises at me, it's thrown some nice surprises at me, like a fabulous new family. Anyway, I've still got copies left, so the offer's still open!

  7. contrabandwidth says Mog's own Nick Hornby? This sounds right up my alley. I'll mog mail you if the offers still open...

  8. Lizziegreeneyes says *contra:* those were my EXACT thoughts... our own Nick Hornby :)

  9. brendanhalpin says My work has been compared to his on more than one occasion. Certainly there's a similarity in our obsessiveness about music, and I do think it was High Fidelity that convinced me that writers were not necessarily some completely different kind of person that I could never be. Now if only there were a similarity in our sales figures....

  10. brendanhalpin says Forgot to mention--the first batch of books went out today, and I still have about half my stock left, so don't be shy!

  11. contrabandwidth says I also hear that Neal Pollack is a great writer for those of us with a music obsession. Perhaps you have more in common with him (in the sales figures, perhaps? :)) - since I can't ever find his books at my library, or at the local big box retailer... I still really want to read some of his books (and yours too!).

  12. brendanhalpin says His Never Mind the Pollacks is a brilliant, hilarious tour through rock history. I think I laughed out loud on every single page. I think it's out of print, but it's definitely worth seeking out.

  13. Bartleby says Book-crossing on MOG, that's a sweet idea indeed. I'll take it up whenever I can. Literature and language always win in having more voices...

  14. fastnbulbous says Nice to see you on MOG! I think I recall trying to lure you on here last year. Now I'm the one slacking, but will get back to mogging soon. I'll come out and say I think Brendan's a better writer than Hornby. I've read and enjoyed many of Hornby's books but am often frustrated by his style. I've read five of Brendan's books and just about all of them, including Long Way Back, are worthy of the NYT's bestseller lists. Make it happen, moggers.

  15. Iren says I finished reading Long Way Back this afternoon... It made me think of two things; first the memoir Never the Same Again by Jesse Sublett, a punk rocker from Austin who bookends his story with the loss of his girlfriend and his fight with cancer. The second is a song... Johnny & Dee Dee by The Eastern Dark...
