31 Days of Halloween: Day 2

Posted over 4 years ago
It's probably possible to make all 31 days consist of Roky Erikson tracks, but I'll try to limit it to 15 or so. I've never understood why Roky gets so overlooked around Halloween, since he sings so convincingly about all things creepy. I guess there's kind of a voyeuristic quality to this--Roky Erikson has been institutionalized and apparently has a pretty tenuous grip on mental health, and so if he's singing with such conviction about demons and aliens and the like, it might be because he really believes the stuff. Which makes the music great. In any case, today's track is a brilliant little audio horror movie entitled "Creature With the Atom Brain." I've loved this song for decades, but I had never seen the movie until a couple of months ago when I caught it on TCM. It was cool to discover that all the dialogue in the song is directly quoted from the movie, and cooler yet to see that Roky does a better job of delivering the dialogue than the movie actors do. In fact, the movie itself is kind of tedious, but the song is a taut, rockin' little number that, in my mind, achieves an air of menace that the movie never reaches. So kick back and enjoy my favorite audio horror movie: "Creature With the Atom Brain."Strange but true: produced by Stu Cook from CCR!

  2. dermahrk says I for one appreciate it, being the proud owner of "You're Gonna Miss Me", the mid-sixties single I bought when it came out. But I really haven't heard that much else he's done, only read about him as one of the classic rock psychos for decades. I hope you caught the Roky Erikson interview that appeared an issue or two ago in Goldmine, in which he discussed his love of horror movies and a bunch more.
