Damn good songs, brand X, in July or any other month.
When Cash cusses at the end of "Dark as a Dungeon," he calls out "How's 'at grab ya, Bob?" That's Bob Johnston, the producer, an interesting figure in his own right. He sat in the booth for some of the best from Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel, Leonard Cohen, and of course The Man In Black.
As a child listening to these albums I always pictured a very contentious atmosphere at these shows, so I figured he was goading the warden or some crusty screw who had warned him to keep things clean. Somebody should add that little piece of information under the miscellaneous heading on Bob's wikipedia page.
In a sense, Johnston was the crusty screw standing between Cash and the corporate master that Cash calls out by name, Columbia Records.
Johnston was really more like a trustee, though; he eventually bolted from the corporation when he got tired of watching all those great albums he'd mid-wifed become megahits while he collected no royalties...

Another song from another prison, not July related
