Pencils Down

Posted over 3 years ago

Last week I posted a song by Puya and indicated that it incorporated a bassline that was quite similar to that of another song by a different band. A friend later told me, after listening to the two songs, that he didn't hear the similarity, so it is quite possible that it is all in my head. In any case, the answer to last week's question is the song attached to this post, you can compare it to the Puya song, which is posted in the comments.

there is some similarity between the riffs in each song, but the Puya track features a very spare bassline of perhaps two notes per measure with guitar filling in the rest, while the Minutemen track has a bass doing the whole riff.  I started to point this out last week, but had no idea what the comparison song was.

Right, right, right, consumerx.  Very poorly played on my part.  I would have been much better served to use the term riff.  Although, one could probably argue that it is, at least in spirit, a bassline, particularly during the chorus, when all of the notes of the riff in question are handled by the bass.

Agreed.  It is a bassline in spirit, but Puya decided to get tricky with their arrangement by having the bass and guitar share.  Cool Tracks!
