SUC on this

Feelin all alone without a friend, you know you feel like dyin.So yeah, I'm willing to admit that all I ever post about is Babybird and Dwight Yoakam. Fuck you for thinking there's something wrong with that. Ok, "fuck you" is a little harsh, but you backed me into a corner there. You know how it is when you've got no escape. I guess what I'm saying here is, "I'm sorry," but you left me no choice. So yeah, that's conditional contrition. It sucks, but take what you can get, and please, don't hate me. Please!

  1. asrati says ...IWYTWM is a song that's just about impossible to ruin. Cheap Trick made it strong: My Id demands I add the ultimate Cheap Trick track to the mix:

  2. brand X says So, despite his best effort, Dwight Yoakam was unable to ruin it... I've seen IWYTWM performed live more times than I could ever begin to count, not once by Cheap Trick, and I have never been disappointed. On that count you are most definitely correct. On the other count, well, on that one you are also quite correct; Surrender is Cheap Trick's finest hour... And speaking of verses that kill me nearly every time... hence the bold.

  3. asrati says No slight to Yoakam intended. He's solid brass. I simply meant to compliment whomever, around or within Cheap Trick, cooked up that IWYTWM tune up. It's a humdinger.

  4. brand X says I was mostly just feigning offense to keep the appearance of "handjobbery" to a minimum, more or less, as a descriptor. There seems to be way too much agreement between los dos of us tonight, if you know what I mean (coincidentally, I don't) .

  5. dermahrk says I've never heard this, though I know the Cheap Trick version by heart. I think it's great, no HJ intended. What album is it from? I only own three of Yoakam's output and may need to get more.

  6. brand X says It's from a 2000 release called "Tomorrow's Sounds Today." It's the most current Yoakam album I own and I've never really given it a fair shake. I like the first four albums so much that I hardly ever listen to to any of the others. When I do break out of those first four I usually put in "This Time" or "Gone," so "Tomorrow's Sounds..." virtually never gets played. I know you have Guitars, Cadillacs. what others do you have?

  7. asrati says "SUC on this" ... are of course the words Robert DeNiro's Taxi Driver, Travis Bickle, utters to Sport (Harvey Keitel), the pimp he's come to off in order to prove to young prostitute Iris (Jodie Foster) that he is a hero, not a zero. I saw this for the first time in a scummy, run-down movie palace on a cold, rainy Autumn night, circa 1979. Real horror show.

  8. dermahrk says I own the first (Guitars...), the second (Hillbilly Deluxe) and the ???th "If There Was A Way. Others you'd recommend?

  9. brand X says I think "if there was a way" is the fourth album. The only thing truly essential I would say you are missing is the third, "buenas noches froma lonely room." There is, to my ears, a significant shift in the sound of the subsequent albums, it's not the songwriting or arrangements that seem to change so much as the production. I don't know, they just get louder and louder with each album. That said, I've had times where "dwightyoakamacoustic.net" has sounded like the best album ever made. It's just songs from other albums stripped down to acoustic guitar and vocals. Not all of the songs benefit from said treatment, but it's still a treat in my opinion. I haven't yet listened to "Blame it on the Vain," but from what I've been hearing about it I am getting pretty eager to hear it.

  11. Carolyn O'Brien says oooooh, this makes me so happy. I have been wanting to discover Dwight, but didn't know where to start. I love Willie Nelson and listen to him daily, but frankly I need other stuff too. Thanks so much! and thanks for hooking up with me.

  12. brand X says No problem. Thanks for posting all the great stuff. I particularly enjoyed "crow jane."
