If you like R&B/Funk and you want to hear a band give you somethin' a little different than whats on the recording, you must see MC! While they definitly are a "musician's band", they have a loyal following of FOOMS. For those eclectic folks, see if you can hear when Kenny Kirkland's composition "Dienda" appears in the set.
This is one of the baddest funk grooves of the 21st Century. First of all they play this bad boy in 6 for most of the tune, which, of course, most R&B/Funk grooves are not in this meter. Added to this just being a dope groove, each individual layer is funkay (both guitar parts, the drum part, the synth bass part, and the keyboard part [which has a slight Isley Bros. feel to it]) in its own ri...
These boys are bad!! They've continued to refine their sound and production skills, write great tunes, musically give props to their predecessors rather than name drop, and play like it ain't no tomorrow. On "Goldigger",listen to the transition from the main song, which is a classic MC loping groove (i.e. "Breakin' My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes), "This Day, This Minute, Right Now, and "What Kind...
Hank Jones is cold smoove on this one!! Great lines flowing from him like water. Grady Tate is really laying it down on this one too!! Nice basic post-bop compostion with great changes. Nothing too complicated, but good vehicle to be creative and swing.
This is a great recording. Very ethereal, yet structured at the same time. Title track is a great tune. Lovano, Frisell, and Paul starting an adventure that has lasted over 20 years.
"Get It Together" was a good album. The title track was a hit single. However, it seems like the guys at Motown didn't really pay the album much mind when they re-mastered it and offered it as a two-fer with Skywriter. Their source material, at least for the song "Get It Together", does not seem to be a master tape, but rather someone's vinyl copy. I've never known a master tape to skip, wh...
And man was I blown away. I'd just read about Geri in Downbeat and was in the record store looking for a record of hers and I ran across this LP with her on it. I bought this record as well as the Double LP of Wynton's Live at Blues Alley and Branford's Random Abstract LP. When I threw Mindgames on the turntable and played that 1st track, I was in shock. The groove for Dolemite was deep; a ...
This album hasn't shown up on the list for Hubert Laws, but this was a very good record. I guess it hasn't been re-released yet. Heavy fusion cats are on the record including his brother Ronnie Laws and Joe Sample; as well as stellar top notch studio musicians including the likes of Snooky Young, and Oscar Brasher (excuse the mispelling).Title track is a great arrangement with Hubert playing ...
Here's "Smitty" soloing over one of those difficult compositions of Steve Coleman back in the early '90's. Clearly "Smitty" is a baaaaaaad man. Well, none of the cats playing on this tune are sad, because if you can make it through a chours of one of Steve tunes, and make it sound as if you're playing it in your sleep, you're doin' thangs!I haven't seen "Smitty" on too many recordings since jo...
I had this record when I was about 4 or 5 years of age. Always liked it. Unfortunately, I cracked the 45 I owned while racing 45s in my aunt's living room (was able to repurchase a couple of decades later).Structured in the mold of another family band (J5), this was much funkier than what the J5 were releasing commercially. The bass line is killin' during the verses of the song. And of cours...
