The baddest Funk drum pattern ever!

Posted almost 4 years ago
When the single was first played on KDAY in Los Angeles, I'd almost lost my mind. Although their entire 1st album was the bomb (Get It Up, Cool, The Stick, etc.) and their next release was highly anticipated by Prince fans, they weren't expecting this. There wasn't anything out there that sounded like this! Then add the funk (I know Morris said that funk was dead) to it. The Hi-Hat pattern is what sealed the deal.Unfortunately, this is a hard pattern to master. It's flawless on the recording because they used a drum machine. In fact, when The Time performed it live then (and now) the pattern was not quite the same, although they still jammed it. There used to be a clip on Youtube with them performing it in Houston in '82/'83 and they still got down, esp. in the closing minutes of the tune (pure showmanship mixed with a new funky synth part). There are a few drummers who I believe can make it happen. John Blackwell, Marvin "Smitty" Smith, Sean Rickman, and Dennis Chambers. I'm sure there are a few more that I'm missing.
