Mog So Far...

Posted over 3 years ago

It's been 5 days for me here. Time for me to get off my ass.

This is an impressive community and I am surprised at how easy it was to find great stuff right away. I am still getting my mogging feet soggy, but I do want to start making an earnest contribution to this very cool place.

I am a music enthusiast, but have never played in instrument at a level discerning to the human ear.

I grew up in a musically oppressive place that was remote enough to only have one music station available. The station played Top 40. Constantly and exclusively. They would change the Top 40 every Sunday and play that Top 40 for a week straight. And nothing else.

Like any well meaning teen, I sought refuge in the comforts of community radio. The shore town nearby had weekly blues show hosted by a man named Joe Burns (who is STILL spinning classics) who was even kind enough to take calls for requests. Each week I would nervously call him and ask for my favorite offering from the previous week. When Joe would play my song on the air and mention me by name at the break it was the highlight of my week. I'd record Joe's 4 hour show and listen all week then I'd make the hour pilgrimage necessary to buy the cassettes from the artists that I liked. That's how I started getting excited about certain songs and it's still how I listen. Now that I think about it, things haven't changed very much.

I am posting my first discovery courtesy of Joe Burns, a Bobby Bland tune that I rarely hear or read about. Up and Down World, the second track of his California Album. This was cut in 1973 after Duke Records was purchased by the ABC Records group. It lead to discovering Bobby Bland & BB King: Together for the first Time and many other important albums for me. I still love it and try to expose as many people as I can to it.

Thanks, Joe.

    Welcome aboard.

Mr Bland's tunes are always welcome, and he seems to be somewhat under-represented here thus far

Well,  it sounds as though you've found the right place.  I thought I knew music,  but the MOG can be as humbling as it is exhilerating.

As For **Bobby Blue Bland** , his approach to music has always thrilled these boney ears.  He "inhabits" a song as few others can.  His guitar playing is inventive, sweet, and low-key.

Unfortunately,  when I press the red button it turns gray and goes around & around & around & around & around & around & around & around & around & around

did I say it goes around & around & around & around and **??Still no f*#king music!??**

Thank you.  Great song.  What a great vocalist.  He has a voice like warm Drambuie, sweet & smooth with a little bite.

Meant to post yesterday, but MOG for some reason wasn't letting me. No big loss - I was just going to agree with everybody about what a bitchen singer he is....

Welcome, boogiechillen.  Your name seduced me: anyone who likes that song can't be all bad.

His California Album was a pleasant relief.  Bland's last Duke albums revealed that he wasn't always the best judge of what songs to record. Often blues artists like him from that era who got discovered by white audiences would end up on big labels that would botch their albums, but that's not true in this case.
