WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

One of the coolest things in electronic music... in my extremely humble opinion

Posted over 3 years ago
I don't listen to much electronic music these days... seems like over the last 5 years or so, there has been an emergence of bands that have managed to do one of several (or more) things - either persue and capture a concept for their sound that they can successfully reproduce live, or are truly advanced instrumentalists (or play with those who are) who can play the shit out of their instruments on stage as well as in the studio... so, long story short, there are lots of bands that play instruments nowadays (well, there always have been, but just seems like, for whatever reason, there are shitloads of them playing now, that are really really good) and coupled with the whole indie rock movement that has spawned a limitless number of sub- and splinter-genres that all have their jewels and gems of bands... ANYHOW, i hardly have the time these days to troll for cool beats, ethereal downtempo, frenetic IDM, fucked up trip-hop what with all the great bands i've been finding... and maybe that's because those type of acts seldom take their acts on the road - and some of them probably shouldn't because the stage just isn't the forum for reproducing the experience of their music... regardless, there is electronic music that is super-creative and definitely as valid as any other types of music... and an example of some of that is Surrounded By Ninjas. Check out their music on itunes, rhapsody or whatever your chosen method of playback may be. they have 2 records - their latest, dual processor (which is actually an exclusive digital release) is so worth a listen, even if you are skeptical of electronic music turning your head these days. and to boot, these guys can play live, and it's really engaging and exciting! 2 dudes, one on keyboards, laptop, loops, samples, effects the other on decks and laptop... they improvise and compose spontaneously. you're not getting hyper-dramatized versions of the cuts off their record, they will start with one of the themes (or a derivation thereof) from the record and basically just push it around, turn it inside out, mold it, knead it and present the crowd with a fresh, innovative and improvised composition... and peeps are still dancing!! so, cool, surrounded by ninjas, if you're in the mood for something electronic, check it out, you may dig.
