WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

One down...four to go?

Posted 11 months ago

So I got into the University of Georgia in Athens. Should be an exciting time, but I have to admit it isn't my number one choice. Or my number two. Or three...

I've whittled the college list down to five, and I like all the schools equally but for different reasons. It's beginning to come down to where I can realistically survive the craziness of college life and not go absolutely insane. I need to be close to a city, I need to be close enough to the familiar, and I need to be as far away from it as possible, if that makes sense. I feel bad because I know so many whose "lives depend on getting to Athens." But, to use an old cliche, it's honestly just not my scene. I've talked to some music snobs here and there, and most of them see Athens as a sort of grassroots Mecca of the indie rock world. I end up shocking them by revealing that roughly 9/10 people (maybe more) have never heard of Jeff Mangum (although I'm guessing more than half of them have encountered him at one point or another), that Of Montreal is known as the band who did that Outback commercial, or that the best college radio station in Georgia isn't run out of Athens, but Atlanta (88.5 of GSU). On top of that, Athens is teensy and if I would have any hope of landing a nice little internship, I'd be forced to commute to Atlanta every day (no public transport here!). Needless to say, I just can't picture myself there.

That being said, I'm very, very thankful that I have the luxury to choose where I want to go. Fingers crossed, I'm hoping to be in Nashville next year at Vanderbilt. It's a bit of a stretch, both for the academics and the wallet, but I think it will be worth it in the end. Now to start on that Vandy app...

Congrats! Good news! (Even if it isn't all of the good news...yet.) So, Nashville? Does that mean you'll go all "country" on us. (shudder)

    Thanks guys!

Haha, no worries Mike.  You know, everyone's been pointing out the irony of me moving to the country music capital of the world since country is the only genre I really cannot bear to listen to. But the typical indie pop/rock/folk acts I listen to only get so far south as Nashville, unless they're playing Florida or something (and yes, I keep checking tour dates for venues on pollstar to make sure I'll get my concert fix every few weeks or so.)  And if they're not playing Nashville, they're either in Knoxville or Memphis, which are within reasonable driving distance.  Plus, their local independent record store, Grimey's, has the absolute best "pre-loved" music section.  Maybe I won't go too terribly broke.
