It looks like many of the old greats are patching up their differences. Bands with extremely acrimonious break-ups early in their career are playing and touring once again.Dinosaur Jr. is on tour once again, after seemingly irreconcilable differences. The Pixies toured in '04 and subsequently Frank Black announced that the band would be recording an album of new material. It since had been reported that Kim Deal had intended to scrap the project due to Black's new material sounding too AOR. But in a Spanish press conference in July '06 the band announced that it tentatively planned to continue working on the new material with the caveat that if "it doesn't sound good, we don't put it into the album".One thing I never thought I'd live long enough to see was Roger Waters and David Gilmour come to terms enough to play onstage together once again as Pink Floyd. However, as I've learned over and over, you can indeed never say never when it comes to music. At the Live 8 Festival in London in '05 they finally did reunite under the old band name. This was remarkable if for no other reason than that it took place after GIlmour had continued releasing albums and touring without Waters as "Pink Floyd" in the 80's and 90's. Waters spent many a year not bothering to hide his bitter feelings towards Gilmour in press interviews. But the experience of that show was reportedly so positive for all involved that they announced a willingness to come together again for special events similar to Live 8. They all seemed to be happy to have those negative emotions behind them. I wouldn't hold my breath for an album of fresh material or a new tour, considering their age at this point; however once again, never say never. A friend of mine and I were planning to hop the pond to see Live 8 in London if for no other reason than to see Floyd reunite (and meet up with a friend there). But, unfortunately, we're both grown-ups with grown-up jobs and responsibilities now. I could likely have swung the time, but he is Veterinary Doctor and couldn't get out of work long enough to make the trip happen. So what do we do instead? Go to an all-day outdoor hard rock festival here in Jersey where I end up having my knee busted. Nice consolation prize, eh?Nevermind that though. Here's a very fine example of Waters, Gilmour and Rick Wright in simpler times on this gem from Ummagumma. A good example of an early attempt at what we would now consider to be a music video.
